This includes most of my research and process from this semester-long project. The word list was "phase one" of this and was done to find and describe our topic and would shape key aspects to focus on and include in our work.
With my second triptych, I decided to include "the 100s" which is a design exercise to encourage variety and contrast within our piece. Although I didn't apply this approach to the final, it definitely helped me with my final triptych.
2. INTRO-
DUCTION
The Modern Ghetto discusses the effects of gentrification
on lower class individuals, families & small businesses. The
discussions held aim to reach a place where advancement
& change can happen while also giving people reassur-
ance that they have other options & won’t be kicked out
what they thought was theirs.
5. With this symposium , I aimed to show the “layers” that
make what gentrification is and how it’s perceived in
New York. At first, I initially tried to depict this by layer-
ing typefaces that varied in style and blurring the more
modern and hip typeface to emphasize the changing
dynamic that’s occuring where developers are buying
out the lots and bringing in new, young, and wealthy
residents. By doing so, the developers outprice the orig-
inal residents since rents raise and the authentic cul-
ture of the neighborhood and the original residents are
forced to move. However, this approach wasn’t success-
ful and I decided to get more experimental and tried to
depict this through the approach. I thought about how
digital formats came and slowly replaced formats that
required more manual effort and applied it to this new
approach. I decided to depict this by hand drawing the
“modern and hip” typeface that I used in the first ap-
proach and distort it using a scanner.

12. JUXTAPOSITION
With the idea of being experimental, I really wanted to
incorporate collage and aspects of photography that
would show how things could change quickly but also
feel very similar. I decided to go out to Sunset Park in
Brooklyn to see if I could photograph this change while
walking between avenues towards Industry City. Due to
the overall environment of Brooklyn and Industry City, I
decided to combine different trends that I’ve noticed
on Instagram, mainly being the new popularity of dis-
posable film photography, collages, and gradients

18. SYMBOL
I originaly thought about using the moon as a symbol
since it’s cyclic and I thought gentrification was cyclic
and out of anyone’s control like the moon. However,
after doing some research and finding out that gentri-
fication happens because there’s a lot of empty lots in a
community that developers buy to bring in “new”
money and that a woman that lived in her residence
for 25 years fought to keep her place, I decided to
change my symbol to hands. Hands are a universal
symbol and certain gestures can be intrepreted differ-
netly and mean different things in different cultures.
