Arethusa was a nymph who swore allegiance to the goddess Artemis. While swimming, she was noticed by the river god Alpheus who fell in love with her. Arethusa fled from Alpheus and prayed to Artemis for help. Artemis turned Arethusa into a spring and transported her to the island of Ortygia in Syracuse, Sicily. Alpheus also turned himself into a river and dug an underground channel from Greece to Sicily so that his waters could mix with those of the Arethusa spring, reuniting him with his lover.
