The landscape is the result of the confluence between different gazes, perceptions,
interpretations and sensibilities.
©Arxiu d’imatges de l'Observatori del Paisatge de Catalunya (David Zagarzazu)
Landscape is both a physical reality (it can be touched, listened to, or walked) and the
mental construction and representation that we culturally make of it. It is the
physiognomy of a territory with all its natural and anthropic elements and, at the same
time, the feelings and emotions that it awakens when we contemplate it.
Font: Ayline Olukman
Landscape includes two intrinsically related dimensions: one of a more personal, subjective,
individual, intimate nature (not all of us are attracted by the same landscapes, depending on
our personal past, our baggage, cultural codes that have been passed down to us, our own
education and sensibility); and a more social, more collective one (when the landscape sends
messages that are directly addressed to our collective imagination).
Every one of people gazes is needed to understand landscapes' logic and idiosyncrasy, and to
ensure their adequate management and planning.
©Arxiu d’imatges de l'Observatori del Paisatge de Catalunya (Ignasi López)
Knowledge is fundamental for taking decisions regarding the landscape, at both local and
national level. It is important to generate, to share and to transfer knowledge and
methodologies to all of society, inviting participation from all its stakeholders.
