CONTEXT OF LANDSCAPE POLICY
(20 October 2000)
Landscape is botha physical reality (it can be touched, listened to, or walked) and the
mental construction and representation that we culturally make of it. It is the
physiognomy of a territory with all its natural and anthropic elements and, at the same
time, the feelings and emotions that it awakens when we contemplate it.

Landscapeincludes two intrinsically related dimensions: one of a more personal, subjective,
individual, intimate nature (not all of us are attracted by the same landscapes, depending on
our personal past, our baggage, cultural codes that have been passed down to us, our own
education and sensibility); and a more social, more collective one (when the landscape sends
messages that are directly addressed to our collective imagination).
