7. The etymology of the word "marriage" comes from the expression: "gift of Motherhood". It is divided into two types: civil marriage and religious marriage. In everyday language an unmarried woman is called "zitella" (spinster), while an unmarried man is called "scapolo" (bachelor). Officially their marital status is named respectively "NUBILE" and "CELIBE". In order to combine the catholic and the civil spheres of our culture, the Italian marriage was included and partially changed in the "Patti Laterani" (1929) and in the "Revisione del Concordatorio" (1984) between the Catholic Church and the Italian State. In any case, what is always and generally recognised is the free love of the two spouses who are also commonly referred to as the "ministers of the marriage". ORIGINS OF MARRIAGE

9. OTHER PICTURES This photo was taken in the 60's. Here we can see the priest who is praying to bless the two new spouses.
10. MARRIAGE PICTURE This photo, taken in the church of Borgo Vodice “Cristo Re”, near Latina, represents a wedding which was celebrated in 1984. While shooting it the ceremony was already over.
11. THEY ARE EXCHANGING RINGS Here in Italy it is tipical to exchange rings during the wedding ceremony. Usually the rings are taken on a pad by a Pagette or a Lady. Usually the colour chosen for the rings is red gold. Lately, however, it is also used white gold.
12. WEDDING CAKES The wedding cake is the traditional dessert for wedding. This tradition dates back to the nineteenth century and can be multi-storeys or one storey, but it is often like a large circle. It is usually decorated with a type of "favours" that represent the bride and groom or something that, in any case, refers to the theme of marriage. Floral decorations are also used: the most common types of flowers are lilies, roses, callas, tulips, gardenias, daisies. The first cut of the cake is started by the groom (with his hand resting on hers) and completed by the bride, who will then take the first slice to the newly-married, then the in-laws, the witnesses and, eventually, all the other guests.
13. CAKE’S DECORATION AND OBJECTS The Heart with the two spouses, in the picture, is a decoration for the cake which they used for the wedding. It was on the cake to represent the new spouses. The flowers were the invitation for the guest. Here in Italy we use also some seatsigns.
14. WEDDING FAVORS Wedding favors and candies are among the symbols that characterise the wedding. The wedding favor has a double meaning: on one side there is a memorial, a symbol of the wedding day spent together, on the other one there is a way of thanking all the guests for their presence and their gifts.

16. - Where did you get married? In the church of Montenero, not far from Latina. - Where did you celebrate your wedding? In a restaurant in Alatri, near Frosinone. - Did you have the "bouquet"? Yes I did, a small "bouquet". - Did you have any "favors"? Yes I did, a big basket full of daisies and confetti. - Did you send the invitations for your wedding? Yes I did, a letter. - Was it a big party? Yes, it was. - Who did you invite to your wedding? I only invited relatives and some of my parents' friends
The Marriage is the sacrament that blinds two people forever. “ The bond of the marriage is too heavy so must be takes two, to carry it” Rodolfo Marco Alen Daniel
Senza turbamento non so guardarla. Franco Fortini

74. 1950’s wedding On a beautiful sunny day, October 16th, 1955 the marriage between Albert and Isabell my paternal grandparents, was held.
75. The marriage was arranged as follows: the guests together with the bride and her father crossed Sermoneta by coach to go to to church.
76. After the ceremony the newly weds went on the bus with all relatives to go the bride’s house to Partecipate to the wedding banquet. During the ceremony and the banquet were made photos and some of them were distributed to relatives.
77. After lunch, my grandparents left for their honeymoon to Caserta,Roma and Florence.
79. My grandmother was born in Latina in 1934 With Veneto-friulane origins. But my grandfather Bruno was born in Mareno di Piave (TV) in 1926; both families were very large. My grandfather came to Latina with his family in 1932 because it was called by Mussolini for the Agro Pontine remediation that was a swamp. They met in 1958 thanks to some common friends and on 31th october 1959 They got married in the church in Borgo Grappa where they still live.
80. The guests gave to the married couple some very beautiful presents. In 1960 the first daughter was born, in 1962 the second child and in 1966 the third daughter were born. All three children were born at home with the help of midwives. My grandmother was always busy with the housework and her children, while my grandfather worked in the fields. Their marriage is based on very deep feelings that after fifty years are still very strong. Indeed in 2009 they celebrated their fifty year marriage and for the occasion we all went to church for their wedding celebration and then we went to a restaurant and we spent a very beautiful day together.
81. My grandmother’s wedding dress was lent by a lady, while my grandfather’s suit Was sewed by his mother. For friends and relatives there were bags of velvet with confetti inside. The lunch was held in my grandfather’s house with about fifty guests and was cooked by a chef called for the occasion. The celebrations went on late into late night .
SARA
93. Luciano was dressed with a classic suit and tie, but Laura was the most beautiful girl that day, and everyone looked inside the church decorated with flowers of bright colors, wearing a flared satin sheath dress, sewn by a dressmaker in the village, and decorated with pearls (so trendy at that time) and had a small hand bouquet of white roses. We could afford a meal at the restaurant, so the closest relatives of the couple went home, where a chef cooked food for everyone. My grandparents met each other on a hot July night in 1961 at a birthday party when they were teens. Young fans of the golden years of Hollywood, Audrey Hepburn, Grece Kelly and Marilyn Monroe, they began to meet for two years, until Luciano asked Laura to marry him. Laura's family accepted this proposal with happiness and organized their ceremony. But unlike today, there were big cars with drivers or dinners with many people or expensive gifts.. But instead, Luciano picked Laura with the famous blue Vespa, and reached the church where relatives were waiting for them.. The Wedding Giorgia
94. For fun, they danced together on the tune of an accordion played by those who were capable of. As gifts, they received household items or clothes. Happily together, they left for their honeymoon, they did not go abroad but the most famous destinations at that time were Rome, Florence or Venice. Although they couldn’t afford lots of things, my grandparents had a great time and a year later Laura gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, my mother.
I testimoni furono i nostri fratelli. Francesca

117. My parents got married on 26th October 1991 when my mother was thirty years old and my father was twenty-six years old. It was all organized by my father’s parents, because my mother didn’t have any parents. They married in the town council. My mother chose the wedding flowers and made a list of gifts for example a set of dishes and a lot of household items. My parent's marriage on 26th October 1991. The marriage was celebrated in the afternoon. Next to the groom and the bride there were two witnesses. My mother and my Father were very excited. They went to the restaurant at 9.30 p.m. and they ate the starter at first which included cheese, tomato, bread with very good sauces etc… It was all good. At 1.00 a.m. my parents cut the wedding cake. They danced and sang all together with their guests.

The wedding lunch was fun and tasty. After speeches, jokes, photo and best wishes,it was 4 p.m.. . AN EXPERIENCE
