Thalidomide was an FDA approved drug in the 1950s to treat morning sickness in pregnant women and was exported to 47 countries. However, it resulted in about 10,000 victims born with malformations due to its use during pregnancy. About 40% of victims died before their first birthday due to malformed ears, eyes, heart, kidney and other organs. Thalidomide was later found to be unsafe for pregnant women and was withdrawn from the market.
