The month of Augustsaw the mostawaited e-sports event of all
time, The International5 or “TI5”an annualgaming tournament featuring the
popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game DOTA 2. Valve
Corporation an American video game development company are the main
organizer of this gigantic event. With the prize pool of a staggering 18 million USD
it is the largest prizepool ever seen in e-sports history.
The tournament was hosted in Seattle for its fourth consecutiveyear,
and the second consecutiveyear that the Main Event took place at KeyArena, a
multi-purposearena in Seattle Center with a total seating capacity of over 17,000.
The main event featured 16 of the best teams fromaround the world, teams
which had been directly invited by the organizers and teams who had to go
through the qualifiers of their respective regions.
After 12 days filled with excitement, hypeand emotion the American team Evil
Geniuses (EG) took the firstprice followed by the Chinese teams CDEC and LGD
who secured second and third place respectively. The three teams received
$6,634,661, $2,856,590and $2,211,554each.
The popular American producer and DJ Deadmau5 played a surpriselive set on
the final day. The event also held a showcasematch where10 lucky fans were
given the chance to play with 10 of the best players who weretaking part in the
tournament.
Streaming platforms such as YouTube and Twitch wereflooded by fans
who watched the live streams that covered every single moment of the main
event. According to trackdota.coma total of 4.5 million viewers watched the TI5
Finals through live streams and other 13 thousand watched it live at KeyArena,
Seattle.
This event is a landmark in e-sports history; it has proven that the gaming
community is huge and is slowly turning into pop culture and shouldn’tbe taken
lightly anymore. This event is the startof a revolution. As technology is taking
over the world the golden era of gaming is no longer justa dreamor a fantasy.
