The ancient Olympic Games were first held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC and were founded by Greeks to honor the god Zeus. The games continued to be held every four years and featured competitions in athletics, chariot and horse racing, and wrestling. In 393 AD, the Roman emperor Theodosius I abolished the Olympics after they had been held for over 1200 years. In 1896, Pierre de Coubertin had the idea to start the Olympic Games again and the first modern Olympics took place in Athens, Greece.
