The history of Santa Claus can be traced back to Saint Nicholas from Turkey in the 300s AD. According to legend, Saint Nicholas donated money to a poor family by secretly putting coins in their chimney. The modern image of Santa Claus is also based on Dutch tales of Sinterklaas, a bishop who visited children on December 6th leaving presents in their shoes by the fireplace. As Dutch settlers came to New York, they brought the tradition of Sinterklaas, which over time became the name Santa Claus in English. Today, Santa Claus is commonly depicted as living at the North Pole and traveling by reindeer to deliver gifts on Christmas Eve.
