Karate practitioners in Japan are hopeful that karate will be included as an Olympic sport for the 2020 Tokyo Games. Karate, a traditional Japanese martial art, has failed to gain inclusion in the past three Olympics. However, chances are higher this time as Tokyo organizers can recommend one or more additional sports by September and the IOC will make its final decision in 2016. For Japanese karate champion Emiko Kawasaki, competing at the Olympics would be the ultimate reward after years of training. Karate would feature two categories, kata which demonstrates choreographed techniques, and kumite which are sparring matches.
