The Haida people lived on Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) off the coast of Canada, where they relied on the abundant natural resources and hunted and fished the local waters. Their diet consisted primarily of salmon, clams, fish, berries and seaweed. As wood was plentiful on the islands, it was an important resource for the Haida, who used it to build boats, houses and other items. Their culture and traditions were passed down orally through stories, songs, dances and totem poles carved from the forests.
