3. INTRODUCTION:
The green lady talks about a ghost, Elizabeth Adams’ spirit.
According to the story Elizabeth was Thomas Adams’ widow, a man
who was murdered in a business trip.
His wife never recovered from the shock for her husband’s death
and every evening he walked around the church to pay her
condolences.
After her husband’s death, two of their sons died (Johanne and
Alice) and their other two sons grew older; she felt a hole in her life.
People say her ghost still walks around the church and in the Manor
house, the house where she lived with her family.
4. STORY: THOMAS ADAMS
Thomas, the son of Robert Adams and Alice Deverill, who had three
children: Agnes, John and Thomas .
He married his wife Elizabeth and they had four children.
Thomas was an important member of the London Butchers Livery
Company; this company traded with animals like cows, pigs and
sheep.
His dead was on Saturday, 17th 1626, when he was in London for a
business or pleasure trip. He was murdered by a band of thieves,
which was normal if you had much money.
He has a grave in the church of Swanbourne, the village where he
lived.
6. STORY: GREEN’S LADY LEGEND
Many people saw this spirit in Elizabeth’s house, where the woman
lived her sad life.
There are many theories about the ghost. Most of them are scientific
but others talk about the spirit and the soul of the members of the
Adams family.
Most people who saw it were old people because the apparitions
were in the Manor house during the 20th century when it was an Old
People Home.
8. CASES
Ackergill Tower: In the 15th century a family owned a castle near Thurso
where a series of murders and revenge murders happened. After all
these facts a widow saw a green lady in one of the towers.
Thainstone House Hotel: In the18th century the daughter of one of the
owners died in a room of this hotel , exactly in room 406; this room was
where the Green Lady appeared.
Newton Castle: In this castle near Scotland, Lady Jean Drummond’s
relationship with one of the Blair’s of Ardblair failed. After that she
dropped her to a loch, three days later the lake turned green. One day
her father was walking in the castle and saw a Lady with a green dress.
Crathes Castle: This 16th century tower house is haunted by two ghosts,
a Green Lady and another young woman. The Green Lady has not
been seen for many years and tradition says that when she is seen it is
an omen of death for a member of the Burnett family.
9. Scientific explanations
A pub near the church where a drunken person can have
hallucinations and see a lady with a green dress.
During the 20th century the house where Elizabeth lived was an Old-
people Home, where ill people lived. They had hallucinations with a
lady with a green dress.
The people interested in the green lady go to the top of the hill. This
is the reason why the hill has a micro climate on the top. This climate
produces mist and creates a hazy place where a normal woman
can look like a ghost.
There are three stone buildings in the area where the people heard
strange sounds; the sound can be produce by the echo.
10. Supernatural explanations.
Thomas’ spirit is in the house and Elizabeth’s spirit is following it.
Elizabeth’s soul is in this place and, as in her life she didn’t have any
good experiences, she can’t rest in peace.
Thomas and Elizabeth’s sons can’t rest in peace and their spirits are
in the village.
Elizabeth’s ghost wants to torment her husband’s murderers’
descendants.
11. CONCLUSION
All the stories are in different times and places but they all have a
common thing: they all talk about women who fell in love or their
lovers were murdered, and after that they committed suicide or
died, appearing in the place where they suffered.
The last place where the Green Lady was seen is in Sawbourne,
where Elizabeth died.
This is a ghost that roams in the place where women suffered from
love.
