• Demographics affect work opportunities; aging
population not retiring
• 55+ rose +4.1% comprising 21% of the total labour
force in 2016
• These affect demand for products and services
Core-aged Employment Virtually Unchanged
• In 2016, employment among the group aged 25 to
54 was virtually unchanged +0.2%
• Declining population growth
Youth Employment & Population On Downward Trend
• Employment among youth aged 15 to 24 declined to
-1.7% in 2016
• Coincides with an annual decline in the size of the
youth population since 2013 as employment
declined at a greater rate than their population
• Comprised 14.4% of the labour force in 2016, lowest
rate since 1976
Part-time Exceeds Full-time
• Part-time employment accounted for most of the
annual increase in 2016, up +2.4% employment
• The last time part-time employment gains exceeded
full-time was in 2009
• Full-time increased +0.4% almost virtually
unchanged
More Youth Working Multiple Jobs
• The proportion of employed people who worked
multiple jobs in 2016 was 5.5%
• Highest on record since 1987
• Youth 15 to 24 were most likely to work multiple jobs
7.2% up +0.6 % from 2015
• Core Age and 55+ virtually unchanged compared to
previous year
Job Permanency Unchanged Since 2010
• 86.7% of employees had permanent positions; a
position with no pre-determined termination date
• Youth were least likely 69.3%

• Since 2010 non permanent employment positions
have increased
• Includes term or contract, seasonal, casual and other
temporary jobs

potential for a hiring requirement of over 63,000
workers by 2025, over 34% of the current workforce.
Demographic challenge:
The manufacturing workforce is older than the overall
labour force of the region; attaining their level of
experience and supervisory skills will be difficult.

  • 5. Age Demographics • Demographics affect work opportunities; aging population not retiring • 55+ rose +4.1% comprising 21% of the total labour force in 2016 • These affect demand for products and services
  • 6. Core-aged Employment Virtually Unchanged • In 2016, employment among the group aged 25 to 54 was virtually unchanged +0.2% • Declining population growth
  • 7. Youth Employment & Population On Downward Trend • Employment among youth aged 15 to 24 declined to -1.7% in 2016 • Coincides with an annual decline in the size of the youth population since 2013 as employment declined at a greater rate than their population • Comprised 14.4% of the labour force in 2016, lowest rate since 1976
  • 8. Part-time Exceeds Full-time • Part-time employment accounted for most of the annual increase in 2016, up +2.4% employment • The last time part-time employment gains exceeded full-time was in 2009 • Full-time increased +0.4% almost virtually unchanged
  • 9. More Youth Working Multiple Jobs • The proportion of employed people who worked multiple jobs in 2016 was 5.5% • Highest on record since 1987 • Youth 15 to 24 were most likely to work multiple jobs 7.2% up +0.6 % from 2015 • Core Age and 55+ virtually unchanged compared to previous year
  • 10. Job Permanency Unchanged Since 2010 • 86.7% of employees had permanent positions; a position with no pre-determined termination date • Youth were least likely 69.3%
  • 11. Non Permanent Jobs • Since 2010 non permanent employment positions have increased • Includes term or contract, seasonal, casual and other temporary jobs • Cost savings for employers • Non permanent = No benefits
  • 13. Fields Predicting Increased Hiring Health - Ageing population Transportation Construction Equipment Operators Public Utilities Wholesale Retail Service Trades Finance in connection with Insurance and Real Estate Manufacturing – Durable Goods
  • 14. Fields Expecting Slowest Hiring: Mining Manufacturing – Non-Durable Goods Education
  • 15. The Future of Manufacturing in the GTA Research predicts a positive growth outlook raise the potential for a hiring requirement of over 63,000 workers by 2025, over 34% of the current workforce. Demographic challenge: The manufacturing workforce is older than the overall labour force of the region; attaining their level of experience and supervisory skills will be difficult.
  • 16. The Future of Manufacturing in the GTA Demographic challenge: Competition from other industries such as construction, utilities, and professional services for high demand skilled occupations.
  • 17. The Future of Manufacturing in the GTA The GTA will be particularly challenged to find: Computer Network Technicians Industrial electricians Industrial mechanics Machinists Machining and Tooling Inspectors Mechanical Trades Supervisors Millwrights Tool and Die Makers Welders
  • 18. Realities Employment growth is expected to fall and shrink after 2020 as productivity improvements (technology) outpace output growth
  • 19. Realities • 75% of all new jobs will require some form of post secondary education • Many Blue Collar jobs now require high levels of literacy and multi-tasking skills • Corporations, Small Businesses and Entrepreneurships, require up to date Social Media Skills to promote and market for businesses to be cost effective
  • 20. Information Age • Driving Job Creation • Shifted from goods to knowledge-based economy • Impacted Skilled Trade Shortages
  • 21. Information Age Opportunities • Information Management • Telecommunications: Installation-Repair, Managers, Call Centres • Researchers, Software Developers, Specialists, Programmers, Database Administrators • Entrepreneurships • Virtual Offices
  • 22. Expanding Markets • Environment – “Go Green” • Biotechnology • Multimedia • Aerospace
