5. Trends & critical issues
Small increase in dairy output. Continued increase in yields and
concentration of production. Beef numbers now close to pre-FMD
peak & sheep back down to level of 30 years ago. Export
opportunities.
Fruit and veg experiencing increased competition. Suffering effects
of poor weather over last 2 years. Impact of recession on changing
patterns of demand.
Baked products – strong demand for artisanal baked goods but
significant competition from supermarkets and rising costs.

• Highly diverse business structure with many
businesses focusing on local and regional markets
• Virtually all sectors/sub-sectors facing significant
cost-price squeeze
• Increased attention on costs. Opportunities to
promote alterative energy solutions & cooperative
