Title: The Events Of Peter: His Beginnings
PO: To obtain background information of Peter
Content Activities/Tips
Intro: 4 mins.
Welcome everybody to this presentation of the
Events of Peter. I am Belinda Dickerson and I will
be conducting this presentation.
Ask: Have you ever thought about the metaphors
that your parents and grandparents taught you
while growing up and how they were just stories
to you at the time and then later on in life it would
be almost as if a light bulb had gone off in your
head, when you saw something much more
deeper or sound in your thinking of the story? I
can remember sharing fishing tales with my daddy.
He was a avid fisherman, He knew that I loved to
go fishing, but I was the type that had to be busy
catching fish, if I didn’t catch fish I didn’t care to
go. Now I was a great fisherman but it was
because my daddy fished morning, noon, and
night. In doing so, he had learned the fishing beds
and where to catch them, so it made it easier for
me to catch fish going with him.
Today we are going to talk about a fisherman. I
don’t know if he was as good of fisherman as my
daddy, he is known to have fished.
1. The Events of Peter is to enlighten your
thoughts. We are going to learn of his humble
beginnings as a child, as a disciple and an
apostle. How he was chosen by Christ to be
used in the church and in feeding the five-
thousand.
Peter’s beginnings were a humble one. His
lineage stems from his father Jonas, whose
occupation was that of a fisherman. We know of
his marital status, for Smith and scripture states
that he lived with his mother-in-law. In carrying on
his father’s occupation as a fisherman provided
the humble foundations Christ had to work with
and is believed to have been between the ages of
30 and 40 when called on him to be a disciple.
2. A disciple is to be a learner, one who is
disciplined in God’s word! Jesus called Peter to

2. be the first disciple (Matt. 4:18, KJV). To be a
disciple and to take on the discipline that is
required of a disciple; provokes the question,
“Aren’t we to take on the position of Peter
when we choose to believe in Christ? Does
Christ not require the same of us when we
choose to follow him? Of course he does. We
should strive each day to learn more of Christ
and his ways. I find that when I study to learn
more of him, I become more aware of how he
expects us to react in all situations. That my
friends can be an extreme blessing. A disciple
learns by obtaining truth and through this
truth, we are able to apply them to our daily
lives in being more like Christ.
3. Let’s look at Peter’s next calling of one being
that of an apostle. This calling was at a time
when James, Andrew and Peter were following
the discipleship under the direction of John.
Strong’s defines an apostle to be one that is
sent forth, a sent one. In 1 Peter 1:1 we find
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the
strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia,
Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
KJV
The acknowledgment of Peter’s position as an
apostle endorses that he was sent by Christ to
fulfill certain duties to the areas of the cities fore-
mentioned. We do not consider ourselves as
apostles today, but as Peter demonstrated, he put
forth the foot work to the faith and followed
Christ.
4. Are we ready, willing, and able to serve
Christ as did Peter? Are you equipped to be
a fisher of men? What does it take to
become a good fisherman? You need good
bait, a knowledgeable guide, one who can
teach you the best bait to use, and where to
fish helps too. Remember, at the beginning
I shared with you how my daddy loved to
fish and knew where all the fish were. He
had learned to discern when and where
they would be ready to feed. So it is when
we are to be fishers of men for Christ. We

3. need to grow and mature in the word, by
studying and being guided by a wise
teacher, so we may learn how to discern
when and where the people are ready to
accept God’s salvation. We as Christians
can also dangle just a little to promote
questions that will help promote growth
and discipleship for Christ. But we must
remember this takes practice, if we step out
to soon, we may not be ready and lose who
can be rescued from this world of sin. We
must be careful and allow the leading of the
Holy Spirit to give us unction as to how
and when we start reeling or pulling in the
fish. Being equipped with discernment
comes with knowledge, experience and
maturity. It can only come through the
workings of the Holy Spirit and the words
of Christ which we find in Mark 1, starting
at verse 16 reading all the way to verse 21.
16 Now as he (Jesus) walked by the sea of
Galilee, he saw Simon (Peter) and Andrew his
brother casting a net into the sea: for they
were fishers.
17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after
me, and I will make you to become fishers of
men.
18 And straightway they forsook their nets,
and followed him.
19 And when he had gone a little further
thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and
John his brother, who also were in the ship
mending their nets.
20 And straightway he called them: and they
left their father Zebedee in the ship with the
hired servants, and went after him.
21 And they went into Capernaum; and
straightway on the sabbath day he entered
into the synagogue, and taught.
KJV
4. Receiving the words of Jesus educates and
promotes the faith that is to come by hearing
and hearing by the word of God (Rom. 10:17).
This is the tool that prepares us as disciples to
be fishers of men. The right kind of fishers of
men. The ones who fish on the right side of the
boat.
5. Why would Jesus tell them to fish on the
right side of the boat? Has anyone noticed
that the fish symbol called an ithycus has
been on the last two slides? Does anyone
notice anything peculiar about it? Think on
it as we turn to John 21:3 and let us
begin… while you continue thinking of
why the fish symbol looks peculiar or does
it? Let us begin;
3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing.
They say unto him, We also go with thee.
They went forth, and entered into a ship
immediately; and that night they caught
nothing.
4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus
stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not
that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have
ye any meat? They answered him, No.
6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the
right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They
cast therefore, and now they were not able to
draw it for the multitude of fishes.
KJV
6. Let us turn to Luke 9:13 and we will be
reading to verse 17.
Luke 9:13-17

NOTE: for the mature crowd seeking
more indepth (teach this or section)
NOTE: Verse 17 will be repeated so will not
read it here although it does go with the
storyline.
Luke 9:13-16,
5. 13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat.
And they said, We have no more but five
loaves and two fishes; except we should go
and buy meat for all this people.
14 For they were about five thousand men.
And he said to his disciples, Make them sit
down by fifties in a company.
15 And they did so, and made them all sit
down.
16 Then he took the five loaves and the two
fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed
them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to
set before the multitude.
17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and
there was taken up of fragments that
remained to them twelve baskets.
KJV
Jesus fulfilled a miracle that day in the
feeding of the 5000 with the loaves and two
fish. He was he who provided the food that
could be shared to the people. We must also
note that it was he that gave the food to the
disciples and instructions for the disciples to
share the food they each obtained to the crowd
of 5000. As they served the people, they also
gave of the spiritual food that would sustain all
others just like the time, God gave the manna
and water to sustain the children of Israel when
they in the wilderness for those forty years
(Ex.16:45).
13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat.
And they said, We have no more but five
loaves and two fishes; except we should go
and buy meat for all this people.
14 For they were about five thousand men.
And he said to his disciples, Make them sit
down by fifties in a company. NOTE:::Ck. Out
spiritual meaning of #50 –in biblical numeric’s -
fifty is the number connected with the Holy Spirit
and his work (Vallowe. 1998, 183.)
15 And they did so, and made them all sit
down.
16 Then he took the five loaves and the two
fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed
them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to
set before the multitude.
TIP: explanation to be digressed with excitement.
I want you to pay attention to what was said and
done here. NOTE: : the spiritual meaning for five =
grace or God’s goodness (Vallowe. 1998, 66)
Jesus is looking to heaven, to the Father, and gave
what was given to him (Jesus) from the Father the
blessing to be shared to the disciples. Now People!
There is a deeper meaning here, Christ has given
the disciples the food, (physical food- that of bread
and meat). But I also want you to go back and read
vs. 13, where it is stated “we have no more but
five loaves and two fishes; except we should
go and buy meat for all this people. The meat
is important for the bodies, it is filling and
sustains us for longer periods of time, in
providing the body, strength and endurance.
Hebrews 5:12, We have to read this, because
this is what came to mind while reading this…
Heb 5:12-14
12 For when for the time ye ought to be
teachers, ye have need that one teach you
again which be the first principles of the
oracles of God; and are become such as have
need of milk, and not of strong meat.
6. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful
in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are
of full age, even those who by reason of use
have their senses exercised to discern both
good and evil.
KJV
Now I want you to turn to John 6:11
11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he
had given thanks, he distributed to the
disciples, and the disciples to them that were
set down; and likewise of the fishes as much
as they would.
12 When they were filled,(for what they could
hold in their stomachs) he said unto his
disciples, Gather up the fragments that
remain, that nothing be lost (didn’t want
anything to go to waste).
13 Therefore they gathered them together,
and filled twelve (governmental completeness)
baskets with the fragments of the five (grace)
barley loaves, which remained over and above
unto them that had eaten.
Now here is what you are to remember
Hebrews 5:12, it said,” But strong meat
belongeth to them that are of full age, even
those who by reason of use have their senses
exercised to discern both good and evil. Now
to continue on reading in verse 14. Then those
men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus
did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that
should come into the world.
KJV
Now, Can you see how the spiritual food has
been fed to the disciples so that they may be
able to absorb the strong meat, and share it to
those who were able to digest it. The one’s
who were able to digest it are the ones that
were able to perceive the truth. They could see
truth for they had the eyes to see that which is
good.
8. 11 For other foundation can no man lay than
that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
It is his truth that is to be our foundation, there
is no other. We become a part of that
foundation, if you go back to read vs. 9, right
before these two verses, Paul informs us that
we are the building, also did you not know that
your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. You
may find that in 1 Cor. 6:19. We are the
church, we have become the many membered
body once we have accepted Christ. To
document; Eph 2:19-22 reads and you may join
me if you like for those of you who like to
follow along.
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and
foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints,
and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself
being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed
together groweth unto an holy temple in the
Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an
habitation of God through the Spirit.
KJV
Here we see God in us and we walking in Him
as one. The unity, being united as one In Christ
Jesus in the physical and in the Spiritual body.
8. In Conclusion:
Peter was first to experience many things
when it came to his salvation. We have learned
that Peter being a disciple of John was the first
to be called a disciple of Jesus at the Sea of
Galilee, first to be called an apostle, remember
that being one who is sent forth, He was also
the first to recognize Jesus to be who he was,
and also some more tid bit news is that he was
NOTE: A deeper level can be added here. If you
care to go further, add Revelation 21:14 Rev 21:14
To be read after vs. 20 connecting and
documenting second witness of both vs. 19 and
20. in left column;
Rev.21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve
foundations, and in them the names of the twelve
apostles of the Lamb.
KJV
In connection with vs. 22 on left, here Rev. 21:
22 continues with;
Rev.21:22 And I saw no temple therein: for the
Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of
it. KJV
Ppt. slide # Peter was the first. Conclusion part 1.
9. the first there to witness the resurrection of
Jesus and proclaim salvation to the Gentiles.
All in all, Peter was witness to many things,
but most important was his activity of being a
servant of Jesus Christ. Peter provides through
his participation in the church, the feeding of
the five thousand, a basic foundation of what
may be seen and understood as an example to
us in how we as Children of God are to serve
not only Jesus Christ, but also the many
membered body as well as those who do not
know Christ.
I am often reminded and if you like have the
audience read the verse aloud or silently with
you of how Peter teaches and reminds “If any
man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God;
if any man minister, let him do it as of the
ability which God giveth: that God in all things
may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to
whom be praise and dominion for ever and
ever. Amen (1 Pet. 4:11).
