Peter’s followingMatt 4:19“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
Luke 51 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake ofGennesaret, the people were crowding aroundhim and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw atthe water’s edge two boats, left there by thefishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 Hegot into one of the boats, the one belonging toSimon, and asked him to put out a little fromshore. Then he sat down and taught the peoplefrom the boat.
Luke 54 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,“Put out into deep water, and let down the nets fora catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve workedhard all night and haven’t caught anything. Butbecause you say so, I will let down the nets.”6 When they had done so, they caught such a largenumber of fish that their nets began to break.7 Sothey signaled their partners in the other boat tocome and help them, and they came and filled bothboats so full that they began to sink.
Luke 58 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am asinful man!” 9 For he and all his companionswere astonished at the catch of fish they hadtaken, 10 and so were James and John, the sonsof Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said toSimon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you willfish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats upon shore, left everything and followed him.
Biblically, some follow because• There is healing• There is food provided• There is a popular trend to it• There is great teachings• There is always something that excites them
John 211 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by theSea of Galilee. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter,Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Canain Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other discipleswere together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Petertold them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So theywent out and got into the boat, but that night theycaught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood onthe shore, but the disciples did not realize that it wasJesus. 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you anyfish?” “No,” they answered.
John 216 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat andyou will find some.” When they did, they were unable tohaul the net in because of the large number of fish. 7 Thenthe disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!”As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” hewrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken itoff) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciplesfollowed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for theywere not far from shore, about a hundred yards. [c]9 Whenthey landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fishon it, and some bread.
John 2110 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you havejust caught.”11 So Simon Peter climbed back into theboat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of largefish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Noneof the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” Theyknew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread andgave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 Thiswas now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciplesafter he was raised from the dead.
John 2115 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to SimonPeter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more thanthese?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simonson of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of mysheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son ofJohn, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesusasked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said,“Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
John 21Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, whenyou were younger you dressed yourself and wentwhere you wanted; but when you are old you willstretch out your hands, and someone else will dressyou and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesussaid this to indicate the kind of death by which Peterwould glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
