The euro is the official currency of 19 of the 27 member states of the European Union. It was introduced in 1999, initially as an accounting currency, with notes and coins entering circulation in 2002. In recent years several eurozone countries have struggled with sovereign debt crises, raising concerns over the long-term sustainability of the euro currency.
