Recent studies have shown that breast cancer can be detected
months before it occurs (or recurs) through a blood test. The
technology for the detection, however, is still being developed as
is the test itself. The researchers responsible for the
breakthrough have stated that the test is geared toward
recurrences and would show the onset of metastasis even before
the cancer cells grow. This is a big deal in the medical community
since early detection is very crucial to cancer treatment.

In the United States alone, one out of every eight women is
diagnosed with breast cancer, which is the second-highest
occurrence next to skin cancer. Breast cancer survivors know all-
too-well that they have to be vigilant during the first two years
post-treatment since it is during these 24 months that the illness
is most likely to return.
While this new blood test has the potential to save millions of
lives, doctors and scientists still highly recommend that women
be more aware of their bodies and take medical exams as
regularly as they can.

It also is a fortunate happenstance that breast cancer is one of
the most treatable forms of cancer with a high survival rate upon
early detection.
Matias Campiani is an alumnus of both Universidad Católica
Argentina and Carnegie Mellon. He is now the head of Welwaze,
which focuses on the development of an A.I.-based diagnostic for
health care. Matias also hopes his work can help with the
