Educate yourself on Breast Cancer ! From myths and misconceptions to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. All you need to know about this cancer that affects 1 out every 8 women. Includes recent statistics and info about radiation therapy, mastectomy, lumpectomy, chemotherapy and much much more. Brought to you by Dr. Beatriz Amendola of the Innovative Cancer Institute.
2. Together, they built ICI to be a cancer center where doctors and patients could find
state-of-the-art technologies and minimally invasive treatments maintaining a small
practice environment while treating patients like family.
Innovative Cancer Institute (ICI) was founded in July of 2008 by Doctors Beatriz and
Marco Amendola, two Board Certified Doctors, each with over 35 years of experience.
Dr. Beatriz is a highly respected
Radiation Oncologist and an honored
member of the leading medical
societies across the globe.
Dr. Marco is a board certified
Radiologist with more than 30
years of experience in
Oncologic Imaging.

In the most recent 5-year period (2013-2017), the breast cancer death rate
declined by 2.1% per year in Hispanics/Latinas, 1.5% per year in blacks, 1.0% per
year in whites, and 0.8% per year in Asians/Pacific Islanders, and was stable in
American Indians/Alaska Natives.

But it’s NOT Common.

26. WHAT IS
BREAST
CANCER
Every day, cells in your body dividing, growing or dying in an
orderly manner. That’s how our bodies work.
Breast Cancer happens when cells in the breast tissue grow and
divide without normal control.
These cells can grow to form a lump or mass, and that’s called a
tumor.
Tumors can be either Benign (Not Cancerous) or Malignant
(Cancerous).
By them time a malignant tumor is large enough to feel, it may
have been growing for a long time.

27. HOW BREAST CANCER CAN GET COMPLICATED
Non-invasive breast cancer -
Ductal carcinoma in situ
Invasive breast cancer
Metastatic breast cancer
Proximity to the lymph nodes allows breast cancer to spread faster.
And that’s what makes it so dangerous.

29. HOW
BREAST
CANCER
HAPPENS
It starts with changes or mutations in
DNA that can cause normal breast cells
to become cancerous cells.
We don’t always know the causes of
cancer, but research has shown there
are ways to increase or decrease your
likelihood of getting cancer.
Those are called RISK FACTORS.

How to improve your odds

It also means there is no one thing that will cause it.

Chemotherapy
Chemo is when Medical Oncologists use drugs to kill
cancer cells. This is a systemic way to treat the whole
body and all the cells, and not localized.
Chemotherapy can cause severe side effects including
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea to name a few.
Patients with large tumors or cancers that reach the
lymph node, may benefit from chemotherapy and
hormonal therapy to stop the cancer from spreading
and/or coming back.

New * Immunotherapy
Source: Susan G. Komen Foundation
Drugs that help the body’s immune system
attack cancer cells are now used to treat many
cancers (including melanoma, lung cancer,
bladder cancer and kidney cancer).
Overall, immunotherapy drugs (including
vaccines) are not as promising for breast cancer
compared to other cancers at this time.
However, they may be effective in treating some
breast cancers.
