3. The Community Art Project's
Pilot to Rejuvenate the Chinese Breakfast
Market at Tiretti Bazaar
4. It is the memory and identity of the
Indian Chinese community in Calcutta
that we aim to revive at the historic
public space of Tiretta Bazaar where
Chinese families over generations
have been selling the famous Chinese
breakfast.
THECULINARYTREASURE Our Objective
6. The Importance of
Tiretti Bazaar
Chinatown - Tiretti Bazaar:
the most famous market square known for its
association with the Indian Chinese community
of Calcutta.
Calcutta is home to India’s first Chinatown.
Almost all Chinese living in India can trace their
roots to the city.
7. The Importance of
Tiretti Bazaar
Commercial Area - strategically
located - between Dalhousie
Square, Lal Bazar & Central
Avenue
Sunday Breakfast Market - food
heritage
8. Kolkata
Chinatown
is unique:
it differs from
the typical
idea of
Chinatowns
elsewhere.
“Enmeshed within the urban fabric of Kolkata, the Chinatowns are
not separate touristic entities, but uphold a way of living alongside
diverse communities."
9. TIRETTI BAZAAR

market street, arranged on the left
hand side and right-hand side from

13. Our Inspiration: Global Movements for public
participation and placemaking
Project for Public Spaces
is a nonprofit planning,
design and educational
organization dedicated to
helping people create and
sustain public spaces that
build stronger communities.
Favela Painting
represents an OrgansparkZ/Art
intervention of social consequences.
The Project is a reflection of a true
bottom-up experience of artistic and
social inclusion rather than an
imposition of what and how things
should be done.
14. To collectively re-imagine
& re-invent public spaces as
the heart of every community.
Strengthening the connection between people
and the places they share
A collaborative process
What is placemaking?
15. Our Approach: What we will do?
Think Global
Join the Global Movement - Participatory grassroots
& inclusive community development - empowering
communities to reinvent neighborhoods, streets and
public places where they live
Act Local
Adapt to local conditions and social & cultural values
16. Everyone has the right to live in a
great place. More importantly,
everyone has the right to
contribute to making the place
where they already live great.
- Fred Kent. Founder, PPS
17. HOW?
Tip
Don’t wait till the end of
the presentation to give
the bottom line.
Reveal your product or
idea (in this case a
translation app) up front.
18. DELIVERABLES
➔ COLOURFUL UMBRELLAS
➔ MOBILE WASTE BINS
➔ MENU FOR FOOD VENDORS
➔ STREET ART
➔ SIGNAGE: BANNERS FOR ‘CHINESE SUNDAY
BREAKFAST MARKET’

Bins for waste
collection &
starting a system
for maintaining a
clean marketplace.
22. MENU FOR FOOD
VENDORS
The Chinese breakfast, is a culinary treasure, a
gift of the Chinese community to Calcutta.
We want people, who come here to eat
Chinese breakfast, to know the families
who have been making this food for
generations - the vendors to have an
identity.
Also people to know the Chinese and
English names of the food items being
sold.
23. STREET ART
Painting of shutters/walls
facing Tiretti Bazaar
vendors on the Poddar
Court side.
Have identified 6 shutters -
will be identifying walls and
surfaces.
24. THE COMPLETE SET
The designs and visuals used
will be specific to the
community, arrived at after
brainstorming with members of
the community who are actively
working on the Project, and also
represent rest of the members
from the community.
25. Benefits: to the Community
1. Infuse a sense of community
2. Reinforce the sense of belonging to their living spaces
they have created, thus a sense of ownership that is
empowering
3. It invites collective expression and a creative dialogue
a bottom up experience of artistic and social inclusion
rather than an imposition of what and how things should
be done
26. How can you help?

29. Here, the Community Art Project Team serves as a
facilitator, collaborator, interpreter, conceptualiser to
the community.
“Rather than painting for
them/about them, it is time we
paint WITH them.”
30. Lighter Quicker Cheaper
Experiment with short term improvements
that can be tested and refined over many years!
Place-led Approach
A unified focus on place outcomes built on
community engagement.
OURAPPROACH
This culinary treasure, a gift of the Chinese community to Calcutta, if not highlighted, talked about and revitalised will soon die out.

Quote from the book - Indian and Chinese Immigrant Communities: Comparative Perspectives
If one has to describe the Sunday breakfast market at Tiretti Bazaar in one word, it would be ‘BUSTLING’. ADD Image Although, it is nothing like it was in the heydays, this bustling character of the bazaar has lived on despite no initiative to revive it could be fructified.
BUSTLING BAZAAR
Can take from the Jaywalker’s Guide to Calcutta by Soumitra Mitra
LQC is a term that has been popularised as part of a global place making conversation by an organisation called Project for Public Spaces.
Will get back to our PROCESS later after introducing our site and what we aim to do.
They are working in North America (USA most Projects are based)
large chunk in Europe
South America
Australia
Africa
Asia and South East Asia
Placemaking takes more skills than any one discipline can offer

COMMUNITY IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART - IT IS THE COMMUNITY’S PROJECT
In this collaborative scheme of things, the artist cannot dictate that this will be the art intervention or this mural will be painted in the community’s public space - it is the community that will communicate and interact with the artists and together they will decide what intervention would be the most suitable, where people themselves can participate in re inventing the public space that they associate with.
Eg. - START Festival calls national and international artists and paints public spaces
Definition of LQC - A low-cost, high-impact incremental framework for improving public spaces in short order that capitalizes on the creative energy of the community to efficiently generate new uses and revenue for places in transition.
This means?? - slide
The best spaces experiment with short term improvements that can be tested and refined over many years - The complexity of public spaces is such that you cannot expect to do everything right initially.
Beginning with short term, experimental improvements can immediately bring benefits to public spaces and the people who use them and inform longer term improvements over time.
