This document discusses how the devil tries to tempt people away from God and the Christian faith. It provides examples from the Bible of how the devil comes during times of spiritual activity like hearing the word of God preached, times of planning generosity or giving, times of weakness or weariness, and when believers assemble. The conclusion exhorts readers to be prepared to resist the devil through submitting to God.

Matthew: The King and His Kingdom_Matthew 12:9-21Stephen Palm
The Sabbath Wars continue to escalate between Jesus and Pharisees. Upon entering a synagogue, Jesus encounters a man with withered hand. In an attempt to trap him, the Pharisees ask, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” Quickly, Jesus turns the question back on them to expose their hard hearts and self-righteousness, “Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? This question left them speechless, but it gave them a front row seat to see Jesus’ compassion on display as he healed the man’s withered hand. Rather than rejoice at the miracle they just witnessed they begin to seek revenge against Christ. Aware of this, Jesus departs and begins to heal all those who are following him to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah. The principle for us is to have a time of rest each week, but that cannot stand in our way from helping those around us who truly need it.
The devil is crafty but we know how he operates. He sets snares in which to trap us in sin. In this lesson we examine in depth how satan operates. Both slides and audio can be viewed together at www.cmcoc.org

Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.

The comes the devil
1. “THEN THE DEVIL COMES”
1 Peter 5:8-9
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your
adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,
walketh about, seeking whom he may
devour:Whom resist stedfast in the faith,
knowing that the same afflictions are
accomplished in your brethren that are in
the world.”
2. THE DEVIL COMES WHEN THE WORD
OF GOD IS PREACHED
• Luke 8:12 “Those by the way side are they
that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh
away the word out of their hearts, lest they
should believe and be saved.”
– As the parable of the sower so clearly teaches
– the devil will come when God’s word is
proclaimed.
– He desperately wants to take it out of your heart!
3. 2nd Thessalonians 2:9-12
• Satan’s work is to deceive people so that they will
not be saved.
• So that our choice to serve Him is an act of free
will, not compulsion.
• Acts 13:4-12
– The false prophet Bar-Jesus, a.k.a. Elymas the
sorcerer, was rightly called a “son of the devil”
for “seeking to turn the proconsul away from
the faith”.
4. Te Devil comes when we plan our
giving
• Acts 4:32; 5:11
• While others in the church were sacrificing
all they had to meet the needs of their
brethren, Satan filled the heart of Ananias
to lie to God about his gift.
• Malachi 3:8
–God is robbed when our giving is
insufficient.
5. 2nd Corinthians 8:12; 9:6-7
• God does not require more of
us than we can afford, but He
does expect our giving to be
generous and cheerful
6. THE DEVIL COMES WHEN WE ARE
SELFISH AND GREEDY
• John 13:1-2; Matthew 26:14-16
– It was the devil who put it in Judas’ heart to betray
Jesus, and Judas’ motive was money.
• John 12:1-6
– The same devilish motive of greed caused Judas to
pilfer the treasury of the Lord and led him to
criticize the generosity of another.
• 1st Timothy 6:10
– “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil”
because it will cause sin to multiply.
7. THE DEVIL COMES WHEN WE ARE
WEAK AND WEARY
• Luke 4:1-3
– The devil came to Jesus when He was weary from
hunger. The first temptation Satan used on this
occasion was to urge Christ to abuse His miraculous
abilities to satisfy that hunger.
• Genesis 25:29-34
– When Esau was famished from an unsuccessful
hunting trip, Jacob used the occasion to take away the
birthright. Compared to what he wanted at the
moment, Esau despised what he should have
cherished.
8. • Hebrews 12:1-3, 14-16
– Jesus’ own endurance against temptation is our
example that we should overcome weariness,
whereas Esau profaned what was holy.
• Galatians 6:9
– It is easy to become weary and discouraged, but
an award awaits those who do not lose heart.
9. THE DEVIL COMES WHEN THE “SONS
OF GOD” ASSEMBLE
• Job 1:6; 2:1
– When the “sons of God”, who in this instance were most
likely angels, “came to present themselves before the Lord...
Satan also came in among them”.
• Romans 8:14; Galatians 3:26
– Today, the term “sons of God” refers to true Spirit-led,
baptized believers in Christ.
• 2nd Corinthians 11:13-15
– If Satan could repeatedly infiltrate a gathering of angels, he
can certainly sneak in to the assemblies of the church. He is a
master of disguise, the original deceiver.
– Revelation 2:8-9
Some churches become synagogues of Satan because of the
evil practiced by their members.
10. CONCLUSION
• 1st Peter 5:8-9
–Knowing now that the devil will attack you
at every opportunity, be prepared to resist
him.
• James 4:7
–Of course, resistance to the devil cannot
happen without submission to God. Have
you submitted to Him?
