The Cock, Fox and the Dog
A long time ago, a cock and a dog became friends. One
day they set off on a journey through the forest. After a
long walk they came upon an oak tree. It was becoming dark and they
decided to rest there. The dog said the cock, “I will sleep in the hole at the bottom
of the tree. If you need anything you can call me.” The cock flew up to a branch
and rested there.
As soon as it was day break, the cock crowed, “Cock-
a-doodle-doo.” A fox in the forest heard the cock
crowing. He was hungry and wanted to have the cock
for breakfast. He went up to the cock and said, “I would like to
meet you. You have such a beautiful voice.”
The cock was very wise and he knew the intentions of the fox. He said, “You can
first meet my friend in the hole and then you can meet me.” As soon as the fox
went near the hole in the oak tree, the dog growled and chased the fox away. The
cock was happy that he had such a true friend.
