– seppur realizzati in cemento, travi in legno
lamellare e prismi vitrei – potrebbe continua-
re all’infinito.
traverso lamelle.
scendenza, come illuminazione, folgorazione
a Neresheim.

When the sun is nailed down
It’s curious to talk about light in a magazine
such as Materia. When you think about the
“essence” of things, can you imagine anything
more intangible, impalpable, and changing
than light? The work of Juha Leiviskä escapes
classifications and stereotypes, and his journey
through the church of St. Thomas in Oulu, St.
John Männistö in Kuopio, and Myyrmäki in
Vantaa – even the transformation of an exist-
ing building like the one located in the sub-
urbs north of Helsinki – results in a slow and
steady approach to the spiritual, immaterial,
and ethereal dimension of architecture. The

original nucleus of the church of Pakila, de-
signed by Yrjö A. Vaskinen in 1950, was part of
the Nordic classicism that from the 1920’s had
followed with thinly veiled interest Italian ar-
chitecture, but at the same time put down solid
roots in the vernacular tradition of so many
country houses and innumerable agricultural
outbuildings. The failed competition for a new
church in 1990, allowed seven years later for
the enlargement of the existing church, taking
advantage of the resources that history has al-
ways made available. When the cathedrals were
white1, it was widespread practice to construct
a new choir, thus changing the size and some-

times even the orientation of the old cathedral.
In the area of the old altar, as a continuation of
the main nave, Leiviskä puts a new liturgical
room that is able to merge with the original part
of the church through a system of mobile parti-
tions. Similarly, the arrangement of the parish
entrance defines the composition of the entire 4
