1. On February 22, 2011, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand at 12:51pm, causing significant damage. 2. Students in Room 7 at Terrace End School learned about the earthquake and gathered facts about it to help organize the information. They decided to bake goods to send to those affected by the disaster. 3. The students wrote letters to accompany the baked goods packages, expressing their sadness for what happened and hopes that the recipients were staying safe. The packages were delivered to Christchurch to distribute to those most in need.

1. Disaster Has Struck Christchurch P rior K nowledge and building on to it. 23.2.2011 What do you already know about the Christchurch Earthquake? Prior knowledge is what we already know. As we read more about the disaster and talked about it we added more information. The new information is underlined in red.

2. The Christchurch Earthquake On February 22 nd , 2011 Christchurch was hit by a 6.3 magnitude at 12.51pm. TEAMS of people were involved. This provided an authentic focus for Room 7 - especially as their learning was centred around TEAM PLAYERS – DOING THE RIGHT THING. More specifically they were learning about showing respect to others and the environment. So using their mapping skills they identified where Christchurch was located using co-ordinates.

3. Facts – Mr de Bono’s White Hat Thinking We identified the facts using topic related vocabulary. Time it struck Magnitude At the depth of Centred near (epi-centre) Compass bearings Aftershocks

4. We are learning the skill of classification. We had gathered so much information that we needed to organise it into categories. We decided on these headings and decided where the information would be placed best. We learned the skill of classifying.

5. Self Managing & Working Together Students working independently. They check with their classmates when they need help deciding the best place to stick their fact. This is a great example of co-operative learning! Good on you Room 7.

6. We are learning the skill of decision making. A group of engaged students who are focused on their learning. They are learning the skill of decision making and classifying.

7. Room 7 Unite Room 7 thought about all the things they could do to help the people in Christchurch. They decided to do some baking!

8. Baking Day Tasha and Jesiah helped stack the chocolate chip cookies and weetbix slice into containers.

9. Cleaning Up! Ezra helped Aaliyah clean up after the baking. They were a great team looking after their working environment especially taking on extra responsibilities.

10. Support Letters Room 7 students wrote compassionate letters expressing their sentiments. They compiled a book as a record of their correspondence. Hopefully the people who receive the baking will make contact with Room 7 when their lives are back to normal.. 15.3.2011 Dear Friends We are all sad for you and we are praying day by day. 12. All Hands On Deck Marcus is supporting students with their letter presentation – part of our TEAM focus for Term 1.

13. Up Up and Away Thanks to Miss Watt, who delivered the parcels to the airport, Room 7’s parcels travelled on N8703 bound for Christchurch on Friday 18 th March. A person from the City Mission was collecting them at 11.25am and taking them straight to their headquarters at 230 Worcester Street Christchurch. They will then distribute them to those that are the most needy. Enjoy!!
