La ofensiva en el norte de Irak por parte del Estado Islámico de Irak y del Levante ha desencadenado numerosas persecuciones de carácter religioso. A pesar de que tanto la comunidad internacional como las instituciones europeas han manifestado su deseo de proteger a los colectivos perseguidos por el integrismo islámico, hay dos comunidades de refugiados que son especialmente vulnerables.
La comunidad Yazidí es un colectivo muy afectado. Los yazidíes son una comunidad kurda que cuenta con un número estimado de 500.000 seguidores, y los ataques contra ellos no son nuevos. En agosto de 2007, yihadistas atacaron sus aldeas y dejaron entre 400 y 700 muertos. A principios de agosto la ONU realizó un llamamiento urgente para rescatar a unas 40.000 personas atrapadas en las montañas del noroeste de Irak.
La limpieza étnica y religiosa ha afectado también a los cristianos iraquíes. El número de cristianos se calcula en torno a 900.000, los cuales están amenazados de muerte si no se convierten al Islam.
