China has a variety of environments ranging from high mountains and deserts in the north and west to coastlines in the south and east. The land contains many large rivers like the Yellow River and Yangtze River that flow from the highlands to the sea. China is also home to diverse wildlife that has adapted to these environments, including yaks in the mountains, antelope in the deserts, and various fish and water animals in the rivers and wetlands. Nearly modern humans began entering China hundreds of thousands of years ago.

The Waters of China • Great rivers flow across the land of China, descending from the highlands of Tibet to the surrounding seas. • The rivers carry lots of sediment, causing erosion and bringing fertile loess to areas downstream.
