Thrift Shopping with The Church of Heavenly RestJay Zises
For three decades, Jay Zises has served as the chairman of A Cap Incorporated Investment Management. Through his company, he helps young and rising entrepreneurs manage their finances. An active community member, Jay Zises is also affiliated with the American Friends of Israeli Defense Forces, and he volunteers with the Church of Heavenly Rest.
The Church of Heavenly Rest is an NYC-based church with an outreach mission to serve those in need and find innovative ways to solve social problems. One of its initiatives is a periodic thrift pop-up called Thrift & Treasures, through which it provides clothing to the local community at affordable prices. It also fosters a culture of responsible consumption, with households donating products instead of throwing them away, and shoppers buying secondhand. Thrift & Treasures opens three Saturdays every year; in the spring, fall, and winter.
Thrift and Treasures sales include a wide variety of clothing and household items from designer clothes to glassware, linens, and children’s books. Volunteers run the sale and people from all over the city come to shop at the Thrift Sale Saturdays. Nothing goes to waste even after the sales are over; anything that remains unsold is then donated to other local thrift shops.

“On June 16, we were not able to sleep at night as some local goons entered the camp where we had built new huts near the forest after demolition of our huts near the UNHCR official camp by the authorities. The goons tried to rob and attempted to rape the refugee women,”
A talk given by Thoughtworks at UKPA UK's 'World Usability Day' event - 10 November 2016.
The challenge of reconnecting unaccompanied child refugees with their loved ones is a growing problem with the global refugee crisis. In Kakuma refugee camp filmmaker Lieven Corthouts sought out a solution after living there for 5 years and talking with refugees struggling to find their families. ThoughtWorks collaborated with Lieven to design and user test a ‘Find Me’ web application with refugees, which exposed the challenges of cultural barriers, limited technical literacy and the western bias applied within the design process.
Mike Gatman is a project manager and coach from ThoughtWorks who looked after the Find Me initiative. He is an agile/lean enthusiast who brings the user to the heart of every delivery, with a background in digital projects across media, telecommunications, banking and retail. Find Me was his first foray into the humanitarian sector.
