SOS began as a vision of Hermann Gmeiner in 1949 to establish family-based homes for orphaned children. The first SOS Children's Village opened in Imst, Austria. By the 1950s, additional villages were established across Europe, including the first outside of Austria in France and Germany in 1956. Over subsequent decades, SOS expanded further across Europe and also began establishing villages in Asia and Africa to serve increasing numbers of orphaned and abandoned children globally.
