The Paris Catacombs began in 1786 when the government decided to consolidate all of the bones from Parisian graves underground in order to clear space for new development above ground. Over 6 million people's remains were relocated from cemeteries to the catacombs, where priests arranged their bones along the walls and ceilings. The catacombs have since become a popular tourist attraction, though they were closed for a period in 2009 after vandals stole bones.
