![The approximant [w]
1. The approximant [w] is produced by the upper and lower lips moving
toward each other but never in contact. It only brings about lip protrusion.
The airstream flows smoothly from the lungs without being stopped by any
part of the mouth, thus making it sound like a vowel.
2. The sound is called a bilabial semi vowel or bilabial approximant. From the
point of the distribution, however, it occupies a consonant position.
3. it can occur at the IMF positions. English words don’t normally end with
the /w/ sound, at least when they are written with the phonetic symbols.
However, a lot of words do end with the letter ‘w’, but are spelled
phonetically with different symbols. The vowel /ɔ:/, and the diphthongs
/əʊ/ and /aʊ/ end with the same mouth shape as the /w/ sound
4. It is spelled with <w> , in limited cases, the [w] does not even appear. In
other cases, the letter <w> appears, but not pronounced.
5. Problem : Indonesians do not normally protrude the lips when pronouncing
this English sound.

The approximant [w] is: 1. Produced by the lips moving toward each other without touching, which causes lip protrusion. Air flows smoothly from the lungs without obstruction. 2. Called a bilabial semi vowel or approximant. It occupies a consonant position in terms of distribution. 3. Can occur in initial, medial, and final positions in words. Many English words ending in 'w' are spelled with different phonetic symbols.
