Affirmative Consent: The Conversation is Changing
Background:
The Affirmative Consent Project was organized exclusively for educational purposes. Specifically, The Affirmative
Consent Project is working to change the conversation when it comes to respect in relationships, and to combat the
issue of sexual assault on college campuses.
Our training products, campus policy guides, state legislative tracking and our Campus Ambassador Program, will help
educate college students and administrators the latest educational programs to combat and reduce sexual assault on
college campuses. Our organization also provides and reports on the latest news, resources and updates on a regular
basis.
Statistics:
1. It is estimated that the percentage of completed or attempted rape victimization among women in higher educational
institutions may be between 20% and 25% over the course of a college career.
2. Among college women, 9 in 10 victims of rape and sexual assault knew their offender.
3. Almost 12.8% of completed rapes, 35% of attempted rapes, and 22.9% of threatened rapes happened during a date.
4. 2.8% experienced either a completed rape (1.7%) or an attempted rape (1.1%) during the six-month period in which
the study was conducted. Of victims, 22.8% were victims of multiple rapes. If this data is calculated for a calendar year
period, nearly 5% of college women are victimized during any given calendar year.It is estimated that for every 1,000
women attending a college or university, there are 35 incidents of rape each academic year.
5. Off-campus sexual victimization is much more common among college women than on-campus victimization. Of
victims of completed rape 33.7% were victimized on campus and 66.3% off campus.
6. Less than 5% of completed or attempted rapes against college women were reported to law enforcement. However,
in 2/3rds of the incidents the victim did tell another person, usually a friend, not family or school officials.

The Affirmative Consent Project campus programs are run by volunteers, known as ‘Campus Ambassadors’, who
organize events, provide information and resources about combatting sexual assault, and bystander intervention
training.
Sexual assault has become one of the most talked about topics in today's media and on today's college campuses. It's
not that there is a higher occurrence of assault on campus today, but the good news is that there are more and more
people coming forward to report incidents, or even discuss that this issue exists.

The problem is: how do we fix it? What mechanisms are there to combat assault, and, more importantly, educate
people about the issue in a way that not only stops violence, but also eliminates any confusion between people who are
going to engage in a sexual encounter. Additionally, there is the process of educating 'bystanders' - those who are
witnessing a possible incident, but don't know what they can do to stop, prevent, or report it.
The Affirmative Consent Project website is aimed at fostering healthy communications, safe encounters, and
experiences for individual safety and security. Our products promote affirmative consent, by advertising awareness and
sexual respect.
To date, we have had success not only as an online presence, but also as a media attraction. We have been featured in
several local, national and international publications, from local college newspapers to major news outlets, magazines
and radio.
Description of Activities:
1. Campus Ambassador Program: This program took off much faster than we had expected. We have placed
opportunities on our website for visitors to apply to represent The Affirmative Consent Project on their college and/or
university campus One of our interns is heading up the project, and we have had several inquiries already from
interested students who are studying sexual assault and consent education. Our goal is to have an ambassador on every
campus that has either adopted or is considering the Affirmative Consent Standard as a policy. We have created an
organizing structure and resource toolkit for these ambassadors to promote our project and our products on their
campus.
2. Affirmative Consent Policy Database: Along with our interactive map that tracks the states that have passed legislative
Affirmative Consent and Sexual Assault Policy (50 States of Consent), we are tracking each of the colleges that have
passed individual Affirmative Consent Policy. There is an interactive map and cross-referenced policy guide that lists
more than 500 colleges and their sexual assault policies, and affirmative consent standard coverage levels.
4. Title IX Case Updates: A newer section of the website is a weekly update to Federal Title IX campus assault cases, and
their progress. We update weekly changes, including new cases; updated cases; and resolved cases.
3. Tradeshows/Festivals: Part of our market outreach will be appearances at tradeshows and other festival events. These
types of events attract our target market for one of two reasons: 1. Tradeshows are generally for school administrators
and other educators who makes purchasing decisions for their institutions and colleges. Festivals attract college
students and other millennials who are also our target market.
Conclusion:
Our goal is to help young people include affirmative consent in their sexual relationships, which will result in lowering
the rate of campus assault and other violent incidents, we are creating an easy path to teaching 'yes means yes'.
