10. Is there a Downside?
Bowling Alone:
Declining Social Capital.
Robert Putnam
Putnam suggests that when activities which deliver a shared sense of identity, like
communal bowling, or team sports are allowed to fade into inconsequence or
oblivion, they are replaced only with individualistic pursuits. It is not just the local
area that suffers: it is as if the national spirit takes a hit.

The 21st century will not be measured by those that can read and write, but rather
by those that can learn, unlearn and relearn.
Editor's Notes
There is a growing trend amongst government agencies and peak bodies to focus on spectator satisfaction and not on the participant. When we celebrate 55,000 people attending a football game we focus exclusively on the spectator, whose involvement is one of voyeurist and not of participant at the same time forgetting that there is only 26 people actually participating.
This presentation, in its brief form, will attempt to draw our attention back to where it belongs, and in the process help focus us on what the next generations may want from their outdoor recreational experience.
