World War I, also known as the Great War, lasted from 1914 to 1918 and involved many of the world's great powers at the time. The Allied Powers of the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, France and Japan fought against the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The majority of battles took place in Europe, especially France, Belgium and Germany. War was declared in August 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and peace was reached in November 1918 after four years of fighting.
