The Pilgrims fled Europe aboard the Mayflower and landed at Plymouth Rock in December 1620, where nearly half of them died that first hard winter. In 1621, the Pilgrims' harvest was bountiful so they decided to share their food with the Wampanoag Indians who had helped them survive the winter, making it the first Thanksgiving celebration.
