Social media is redefining how hospitals and healthcare marketers handle communications around their organizations; it is creating new rules and offering new tools for connecting with target audiences. The Onslow social media program used this new media as a means to create a connection with the community.
Onslow is located in a military-oriented community with the lowest median age (23) in North Carolina. Because of the high population of children – especially young children – our community is home to a disproportional share of mothers with children still at home. With military families moving in and out of the area on a regular basis, and with the steady deployment of troops to the Middle East, there are many temporarily one-parent families in our community who would benefit from a connection with other parents in Onslow County. This unique situation presented an opportunity for the hospital to reach out to these parents, to build a positive relationship, to make a meaningful difference in their lives, and to enhance the public perception of the hospital’s quality.
By providing meaningful and useful health care information in a completely new way, one that was more integrated with the community members’ lives and worked to actively engage them, the hospital was able to improve and enhance its relationship with the community and, as a result, improve brand awareness, stop out-migration and affect positive perception scores of the hospital for the first time in five years.
Additionally, our presentation will speak to the role of transparency in a social media campaign and will focus on enhancing communication with patients/target audiences.

Introduction
Approximately 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her life, making breast cancer the most common cancer in women within the U.S. (CDC)
Although very rare, women below the age of 45 can be diagnosed.
Many young women are not aware of the risks they may run in having breast cancer and therefore also don’t know the ways to manage their risks.
Thus the CDC launched the Bring Your Brave campaign in 2015, to be able to bring awareness and adequate information to women specifically those that are 45 and younger.

The campaign has a target audience of women ages 18 to 44 focusing on those who are predisposed by having a family history of breast cancer.
In addition, the campaign also helps educate health care providers on how to help their patients who are high risk on how to manage and deal with these risk factors.

This channel is how the relationship can affect how receptive someone is to health messages being provided to them.
This channel is far more likely to be trusted than a media source.
For example, having a patient hear something related to her health from her doctor would help her more than if she read about it on social media.

Being able to seek help through professionals one is comfortable is extremely helpful.
Having a connection to a health provider or counselor allows patients to feel more connected and receptive of information compared to hearing it from someone they don’t trust.

The method in which I would reach the intended audience is a printed material. More specifically a poster. Posters are “good at raising awareness and communicating limited amounts of health information” (Bensley & Brookins -Fisher 2009). founding partners, text4baby has grown to a
500-plus coalition of active public and private sector
partners comprised of government agencies, professional
associations, hospitals, corporations, academic institutions
and nonprofit organizations. These include the oSTp, the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the
Department of Defense Military Health System and more than
22 state agencies, including New York City, which advertises
the program through its distribution of birth certificates.
Text4baby was honored by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius
with the prestigious HHSinnovates award, given to innovations
that have improved HHS service. it also received the prestigious
Silver Anvil Best of Show Award from Public Relations Soci-
ety of America. in addition, text4baby hosted a congressional
briefing and secured a recommendation letter from California
Congresswoman lois Capps, who encouraged members of
Congress to promote the service.
