This document summarizes changing demographics in New Orleans and surrounding parishes based on Census and survey data from 2000-2007. It finds that the working age population increased while the proportion of children decreased across the region. Educational attainment rose as the percentage of adults without a high school diploma declined and those with a bachelor's degree or higher increased. Poverty rates fell in New Orleans but rose in neighboring parishes. Homeownership also initially increased after Hurricane Katrina but is now slowing. The population became more diverse with growing Hispanic and Asian percentages.
