National Alliance to End Homelessness

The chairman and CEO of Population Institute in Washington, D.C., Bill "William" Ryerson strives to educate important leadership constituents about the population aspect of current events like food and water shortages, and security issues, among other factors. Experienced in the reproductive health industry, Bill Ryerson fights for gender equality, reproductive health, and other forms of violence against women and girls, including female genital mutilation (FGM) through Population Media Center (PMC), a Vermont-based non-profit organization. For decades PMC has been working to make the planet a fair and better place for females since female gender appears to have been robbed of the majority of human rights in the name of religion and culture. Pursuing the aforementioned purpose, PMC disseminates information that combats problematic beliefs in certain cultures in a formal manner. One of the problems PMC recognizes and has devoted significant efforts to eradicating is female genital mutilation. Female genital mutilation is the act of injuring the external female genitalia by means of partial or complete removal for non-medical reasons. Some societies support female genital mutilation as a punishment for women and girls or as a rite of passage into womanhood. In any case, female genital mutilation is a violation of basic human rights, according to UNICEF. The practice causes long-term psychological and physical discomfort in females. It also predisposes women to future complications after childbirth. Examples of these complications are early neonatal death and postpartum hemorrhage. Through its Hεrε S’ra ("The Road to Happiness"), PMC disseminates information that reveals the negative impacts of female genital mutilation. The drama was first aired in Burkina Faso in September 2021, and it took almost two years to air the entire episodes. Many listeners agreed that genital mutilation is indeed a useless practice due to the drama.

WETT, & AJAY BAHL New York University, USA ARNOLD COHEN & DEBORAH BARON ELLIS The Partnership for the Homeless, USA Abstract We interviewed 61 housed and 79 homeless adults aged 55 and over about disability; economic, human and social capital; and stressful life events prior to becoming homeless. Over half of the homeless group had previously led conventional lives. Human capital, social capital and life events were more important than disability or economic capital in predicting homelessness. The homeless adults were younger, more likely to be male and better educated than housed adults, but had shorter job tenure and fewer social ties. Homeless adults faced multiple, cascading risks, including job loss and housing loss. Implications for prevention are discussed. In 1973 a book on homeless adults in New York was entitled Old men drunk and sober (Bahr & Caplow, 1973), but by the 1980s attention shifted to â€˜the new homelessâ€™: young minority men and families (e.g. New York Commission on the Homeless, 1992). In 1990, adults aged 50â€“61 used shelter at less than a third the rate, and adults aged 62 and over less than a 15th the rate, of adults aged 18â€“39 (0.41%, 0.09% and 1.40â€“1.45% of the population respectively, Culhane & Metraux, 1999). But homelessness among older adults is again on the rise. This study asks why, and what to do about it. The reduction in poverty among adults aged 65 and older in the United States from 35 percent in 1960 to 10 percent in 1995 is widely hailed as an accomplish- ment of Social Security. However, although older people continued to make progress relative to the poverty line until the mid-1990s, progress relative to median non-elderly income stagnated in the 1980s (Engelhardt & Gruber, 2004). Literature on ru n a w a y adolescents dates back to the 1920s, but very little re s e a rch focuses on the c u l t u re of homeless adolescents. Homeless adolescents exist literally on the periphery of society, often leading to exclusion and marginalization, as these youth gravitate toward isolated locations, such as abandoned areas of the city, hidden spaces in public build- ings, and remote or inaccessible sites. U l t i m a t e l y, they find themselves pro- hibited from participating in society and limited in their use of societal powers and re s o u rces (Raleigh- D u R o ff, 2004; Rice, Milburn , R o t h e r a m - B o rus, Mallett, & Rosenthal, 2005). This study explores the culture and life experiences of homeless adolescents in a major urban area. Life on the streets has the potential to erode the emotional and physical w e l f a re of the abandoned child ( M i l b u rn et al., 2007; Robert s o n , 1998). To survive, many of these adolescents re s o rt to drug dealing and a myriad of high-risk activities that re n- der their life issues diff e rent fro m those of the general adolescent population (Auerswald & Eyre, 2002; B a rry, Ensign, & Lippek 2002; Ginzler, G a rret, Baer, & Peterson, 2007). These youth are at increased risk for a host of physical, psychosocial, and psychological problems (Alexander & Schrauben, 2006; Slesnick, Pre s t o p n i k , Meyers, & Glassman, 2007; Ta y l o r- S e e h a f e r, Jacobvitz, & Steiker, 2008). Homeless Adolescents Homeless adolescents, also re f e rre d to as street youth, tend to roam the s t reets at night in search of safe shelter and/or to avoid victimization. Because of their fear of victimization, these homeless youth try to avoid contact and interactions with the adult homeless population (Rew, 2008). Fear and the need to survive may evolve into participation in altern a t i v e behaviors, such as selling and/or using drugs, prostitution, and other crimes that elicit disdain from main- s t ream society and perpetuate isola- tion and marginalization (Auerswald & E y re, 2002; Peterson, Baer, We l l s , G i n z l e r, & Garrett, 2006). Adolescence is a period of pro- found biopsychosocial development. Identity formation, the quest for autonomy and independence, and t r a n s f o rmations in family and peer relationships, emerging cognitive abil- ities, and socioeconomic factors inter- act and affect the adolescent’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior.
