Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

I’ve taken a slightly different approach than our other panelists. Since they dwarf me in their tech skills I’ve decided to share ways that I’ve extended my enjoyment of the Model S that are expressive. So here we go.
If you are at this conference, own a Tesla, or work with them, I believe what you believe: what we do with our lives matters. We want our efforts to have impact, and for those impacts to create enjoyment – for our families, neighbors, for ourselves. We wanted to have impact with our Model S, and our future Model X. So why does Tesla matter to us?
When I was 5 we moved to Italy for two years, where I watched Ferrari Dinos and Lamborghini Miuras dogfight on the Autostrada. Unfortunately, I was watching them from the inside of a VW bus, the pinnacle of aerodynamic impurity - but campy, with soul. So Italy - its automakers, their contribution to a national identity - made an impression. What we make can be part of our identity.
When we moved to California in 1970, my father went to work for Southern California Edison, doing advanced engineering. What captured my imagination most was his work on Solar One, the mirror array in the California desert that was a pioneering solar project. So that connection to science and engineering made impressions. What we think is also part of our identity.
Thanks to Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Yale, UC Berkeley, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, I became an architect. Those first days I drove our Model S, everyone asked why I’d bought it. Purpose Performance Beauty Responsibility Why wouldn’t our architecture endeavor to be this good? What we imagine and create is also part of our identity. So if this Model S is part of our identity…
… how can we use it to be more than a car? To extend its impact, our impact, our enjoyment? I decided it would catalyze me to do things I hadn’t done before . First up was participation in the forums. My 400 posts on TMC are really nothing, but that was new for me. Riding the high after our Austin test drive, I wrote the following:
“ Remarkable. Tesla flipped a quarter and landed it standing up on its side – a driving experience so unique it leapfrogs the status quo while also one so natural, intuitive, and familiar that one is instantly comfortable in the car… … they’ve even nailed the sequencing. When you buy something from Apple, the joy starts with the beauty of the box – with the Model S, it’s the door handles.
Artful, scientific, high performance, beautiful – the handles tell you the story of the car. You expect a different experience when those things present themselves to you, and you get it… … as quiet as it was in the car, what was more amazing was watching one pull away, silently. Remember the landspeeder Luke Skywalker cruised across the desert – yup, that’s what it sounded like…
… when we got back into our BMW to drive home, my wife, who was skeptical 60 minutes earlier remarked, “It’s kinda a letdown”, to which I asked, “What”? She replied, “This (the BMW)”. My daughter, after complaining about getting dragged 80 miles from San Antonio to Austin, stopped texting and said, “Dad, that was cool”. My son asked if it was too late to get a Signature. That sums it up. All in.”
We also met Dave through the forums. We met for lunch and I brought my son to see his Roadster. All he said on the way was, “Dad, what about stranger danger.” Proved to be nothing of the sort and so when Dave’s car came we did another new thing, we threw a Delivery Party. We did the same for my car, complete with logo glasses – sorry for any trademark infringements, Tesla.
The parties were awesome, they led to at least one purchase and a whole lot of Tesla grins. OK, we did exceed the residential speed limit a bit and one person was so excited she blew right through a stop sign, but those parties were great – you could sense that everyone knew they were experiencing history. They were.
So all these great new experiences encouraged me, a fifty year-old, to hop the digital divide and create a blog about our Ownership Experience, which I started 6 months ago: teslamodels.wordpress.com I had no idea what to do, but I did know my office used Wordpress to create our blog, so that was enough for me. I spent an hour or two setting things up and off I went.
First, it’s made me feel even more connected. In fact, Brian H. has actually commented positively more times than he’s corrected my grammar. And I think I want to go drink some of the glacial water in Norway, per capita, they are bringing it! I’ve been called out by Wordpress and Jim Cramer, both of which got me over 1,000 views those days. Booyah!
The blog shares our experiences as we have evolved in our ownership of the car, good and bad. Especially fun was reserving our Model X for my wife from the touchscreen of the Model S! Has anyone else here done that? Well, that was trying another new thing for us. It just adds to the car’s great story.
My other day over 1,000 views was when I traded barbs with John Broder. I guess I was lucky and caught the whole thing early because he e-mailed me personally twice in response to posts I made on the NY Times website, right before all hell broke loose. I covered Aaron’s drive and reposted Tesla’s graphs. So I helped fight the injustice and got more page views to boot!
The blog’s also helped me make new friends, having met 6 Model S owners at someone else’s delivery party. There was a Ferrari owner there, sadly revving his engine every time he gave a test drive. It reminded me of the ending scene from Jurassic Park – and the irony of the banner ‘When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth.” Yet we all know Ferrari’s aren’t the only dinosaurs…
… there are plenty of those Frackers in the Texas Legislature. Which created the opportunity to provide data with one of several polls I’ve conducted. Here, 98% of people supported allowing Tesla to bypass dealerships. In another, 93% said they’d buy a Tesla in the next several years. If offered 52% would take a Model S rather than shares in TSLA (of course, that’s when it was at $90/share)
I have a QR code in the window that links to my blog. I joined Instagram (though my daughter got 170 followers to my 2 in her first hour on her ‘Pretty Little Liars’ thread). And I spoke to a UTSA Business School class after being chased down in a parking garage. Definitely new places. But what I like best is the car and blog let me be expressive!
