Alisha Sarr, a 4-year old girl of Angolan origin, presented with headaches, fatigue, joint pain, swelling of hands and feet, jaundice and swelling of the left hand. Physical exam found paleness, swelling of the left hand and upper left abdomen, and limited digestive sounds. Blood tests found a slightly elevated white blood cell count within the normal range, and the patient was positive for anemia with low red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels. Fasting blood glucose was within the normal range.
