Goals:
Students will plan, calculate and map out a driving trip accross the country from Oakland,
Ca to Washington D.C. which will be detailed on an excel spreadsheet. They will also
complete a travel diary and a one page summary of the trip including a discussion of the
actual cost vs. estimated cost of the trip and what % of the costs were spent on gas,
lodging, food and spending money.
Objectives:
Students will plan a road trip from Oakland to the state capital in Washington D.C. They
will travel through at least 15 states, visit at least 3 state capitals, visit 2 bodies of water,
visit one national park and one national monument. They will determine the route,
calculate the distances,cost of gas, food, lodging and expenses.
Unit Summary and Sequence of Events – give details:
Students will work in pairs to plan their cross country trip.
Day 1-4 - Students will receive a handout stating basic info such as price of gas across
country, travel requirements, all must sleep 8 hrs/day, food pricing, required number of
rest stops per day, and price of souvenirs. Students will research states and decide which
cities and tourist attractions they would like to see. They will make an estimate on how
much this trip will cost.
Day 5 - Students will find/print a map of the U.S. to use to plot route.
Day 6 - Students will discuss and create an Excel spreadsheet to log info.
Day 7-11 - Students will work independently to collect travel info.
Day 12-14 - Students will log info collected into spreadsheet, compile travel diary and
write one page summary.
