Turning Milk into Plastic
• In the early 20th century, milk was used to make many different plastic ornaments and
items
• How is it possible?
• What ingredients and utensils do we need?
Let´s try it here!
400 ml beaker thermometer
measuring glass
Acetic acidSkimmed milk
heating system (cooking plate)
glass rod
Turning Milk into Plastic
Procedure (how we should continue to make things happen…)
1) Put 200 ml of milk into 400 ml beaker and place the beaker on the cooking plate
2) Begin to heat the beaker (containing milk) gently and continue until the
temperature of the milk solution is at least 50 ⁰C
• Measure the temperature by thermometer
3) When the temperature of the milk solution is high enough, pour 10 ml of acetic
acid into the solution
• Remember to stir (mix) the solution with glass rod while you pour the acetic
acid!
4) Take the precipitate out of the beaker, place it on the hand paper
5) Now you can mold (re-shape) it into the form of ball, heart etc…
6) Let it dry for one day, tomorrow your plastic will be ready to use 
