American children are not receiving sufficient educational reinforcement at home, hindering their academic achievement. A proposed mobile app aims to address this by generating subject-specific questions for parents to ask and answer with their children. The app utilizes IBM Watson to source answers and provides gamified incentives for parents to regularly engage with their children on the app, while also facilitating communication between parents and schools.

A great passion of mine is to advocate for child abuse and neglect. Research shows that
child abuse and neglect is a critical issue because it happens daily. The focus of my advocacy
efforts is child abuse and neglect as I am passionate about the well-being and safety of all
children. I would like to address the issue of abuse and neglect of children by their caregivers or
any adult figure. Although some parents may have the means to provide adequate resources, they
oftentimes fail to satisfy areas of needs with children that include but are not limited to
compassion, respect, access to learning resources, proper food and clothing, protection and
safety, good moral character development, love and much more.
An example of a policymaker I would consult would be the Department of Children and
Families (DCF). The Department of Children and Families would be first on my list to contact as
they are easily accessible and ready for contact as they deal with child abuse, exploitation, and
neglect directly. Furthermore, the Department of Children and Families are always open to
providing information that will be useful on the topic and assistance with furthering knowledge
on the processes and issues with child abuse and neglect. The strategies that will be used to gain
support from the Department of Children and Families would include formally arranging a

The ability to critique our own writing, to find mistakes and correct them, is developed over time as we read and evaluate the work of others, then apply what we have learned to our own work. To facilitate this process, I am providing some focused questions to help you learn to critique Paper 1 effectively. Particularly since your first paper is a summary, rather than the personal or analytical essays you might be used to writing, the criteria shifts to what the original author is saying, rather than any personal view of the the student summarizer.

Community relationships are important in school success. Schools are often at the center of community activity and can be a significant source of pride to a community. Creating and sustaining this positive relationship is part of every educator’s work. This is especially true in communities where tax levy elections support the school. Establishing positive community relationships is the right thing to do. When people in the community work together on behalf of students, great things can happen. Part of establishing positive community relationships is “getting the message out” about the good things the school is doing in/for the community.
For this assignment, you are to take the part of a teacher who has been invited to speak for 10-15 minutes to a community group (your choice) to discuss the school, what students are doing in/for the community, and how the community can best support the school and its students.
Your presentation should be creative, engaging, and media focused. You may use the presentation software of your choice (Power Point, Present Me, Prezi, etc.). The length of the presentation should be sufficient to cover a 10-15 minute presentation. It is not necessary to use reference materials, but any reference materials cited should be cited/referenced according to APA as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. PBS KIDS iPhone App Study: Findings and Implications
The document summarizes findings from a study of the PBS KIDS iPhone apps Super WHY! and Martha Speaks: Martha's Dog Party. 90 children between ages 3-7 from low-income families participated. On average, children spent 40-50 minutes per session playing the apps for a total of about 5 hours over 2 weeks. The apps were very intuitive for children to use. In one study conducted to determine the causes of conflict between the parents of children with disabilities and school personnel, found that 90% of parents felt that “either the school did not view their child as an individual with unique talents and abilities, or it saw their child through a deficit-model perspective, focusing only on the child’s weaknesses” (Lake & Billingsley, 2000, p.244). On the other hand, school personal claimed that the parents were uncompromising to alternative solutions and suggestions. Other sources of conflict between parents and their child’s school, which resulted from this study, included miscommunication, mistrust, limited resource availability and feeling devaluation (Lake & Billingsley, 2009). At any point during the school year, parents may have concerns regarding their child’s academic or social development, IEP progress or other school related problems. Their first point of contact may be you, as the special educator, or the school’s administration for the purpose of setting a meeting date discuss an agreeable solution.
As we have learned through our reading and coursework thus far, a school district is not required to design the “best program,” or to provide “the best education possible,” but to provide an appropriate program or service. Moreover, school districts are given some latitude in deciding on the use of appropriate methodologies and strategies, and in what combination, to meet a student’s unique needs and provide an appropriate program.
During Destini’s IEP team meeting, her parents bring up their concern regarding their daughter’s progress and request that she receive more intense support in the area of reading. In addition, Destini’s parents demand that the district immediately provide a specialized and costly supplemental remedial reading program provided by an agency not employed by the district to support her reading deficits.
Because her parents contacted you after seeing Destini’s report card, you anticipated this topic being brought up during the meeting. ago. Fierce conflicts over the expansion of charter schools, school closures, high-stakes testing,
teacher evaluation, and the merits of the common core have been common in communities
across the country. Unlike the current political debates over immigration, taxes, and healthcare,
which typically pit Republicans against Democrats, the fault lines in these long-running conflicts
over education have frequently put leaders in the Democratic Party against constituencies that
are typically regarded as a stable part of their base, namely teachers' unions and parents and
activists in low-income communities of color.
Not surprisingly, some academics (myself included) have chosen to weigh in on these education
conflicts. Some have participated actively out of a sense of moral obligation because the
research they have done has a direct bearing on the issues under debate. Others have done so
because of their close political or ideological alignment to one side or the other. Most do quickly
learn that becoming embroiled in such heated debates, especially when the stakes are high,
always comes with risks to reputation, and in some cases, even job security.
Having participated in some of these battles over the
years, I have arrived at an understanding about how
and when to intervene in the debate through our
scholarship and writing. Here are criteria that I have
found helpful:
1) Avoid calling upon others to take stands that
you are not taking yourself. For example,
although I have been critical of high-stakes testing
for many years, I have never encouraged parents to
"opt out." I feel that this is a decision that each
parent must make on their own, and while I feel it is
appropriate to explain the merits and drawbacks
associated with high-stakes testing, I draw the line
at telling parents what to do with their children.
2) Only enter conflicts in which you have a
knowledgeable position that can be supported by research. This may seem like an
obvious rule of thumb, but I have seen many scholars drawn into debates where they lack the
expertise to offer well-reasoned positions. Invariably, their reputations are sullied when it turns
out they can't effectively defend a position they have taken.

PBS KIDS iPhone App Study: Findings and Implications

In one study conducted to determine the causes of conflict between the parents of children with disabilities and school personnel, found that 90% of parents felt that “either the school did not view their child as an individual with unique talents and abilities, or it saw their child through a deficit-model perspective, focusing only on the child’s weaknesses” (Lake & Billingsley, 2000, p.244). On the other hand, school personal claimed that the parents were uncompromising to alternative solutions and suggestions. Other sources of conflict between parents and their child’s school, which resulted from this study, included miscommunication, mistrust, limited resource availability and feeling devaluation (Lake & Billingsley, 2009). At any point during the school year, parents may have concerns regarding their child’s academic or social development, IEP progress or other school related problems. Their first point of contact may be you, as the special educator, or the school’s administration for the purpose of setting a meeting date discuss an agreeable solution.
As we have learned through our reading and coursework thus far, a school district is not required to design the “best program,” or to provide “the best education possible,” but to provide an appropriate program or service. Moreover, school districts are given some latitude in deciding on the use of appropriate methodologies and strategies, and in what combination, to meet a student’s unique needs and provide an appropriate program.
During Destini’s IEP team meeting, her parents bring up their concern regarding their daughter’s progress and request that she receive more intense support in the area of reading. In addition, Destini’s parents demand that the district immediately provide a specialized and costly supplemental remedial reading program provided by an agency not employed by the district to support her reading deficits.
Because her parents contacted you after seeing Destini’s report card, you anticipated this topic being brought up during the meeting. However, there is a large portion of American children that are not getting the at- home educational reinforcement that they need. 1. Give the app a grade level and a subject and it will come up with a list of Questions and answers for the parent 1. IE: 4th Grade, Civil War 2. Or Speak or Type your own questions, and the app will instantly find answers and the “breakdown” of how it found those answers. 1. IE: Who was the leader of the confederate army? 3. Parents get points for how much time they spend on the app - those points can be redeemed at participating retailers 4. To encourage parents to stick to it, they can connect with other parents and share questions and their scores. 5. There’s also a portion where the school can post notes and reminders on the app. (i.e. Parent Teach Conference on May 6) and collect attendance at these events teachassist with IBM WATSON
