He has a successful career in business development, most notably leading IBM's transformation into a premier provider of software and professional services. Through initiatives like IBM OnDemand, he helped launch the company's Enterprise Content Management business, now a multi-billion dollar global leader. Following a successful multi-year career with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) where he was responsible
for new business development associated with emerging technologies, Tom joined IBM to lead the
transformation of their Printing Systems Division into a premier provider of software and professional services
solutions.
Among the initial offerings his team produced was the IBM OnDemand document archive and retrieval
products which served as the catalyst for such industry innovations as ---
• virtual book publishing (Ingram Book’s Lightning Press)
• on-line financial statements (Charles Schwab, Bankers Trust)
• automated postal delivery services (US Postal, Royal Mail, Deutsche Post)
These document archival and report management capabilities became the lynchpin of IBM’s Enterprise
Content Management (ECM) business which included acquisitions of FileNet and PureEdge and has now
grown into a multi-billion-dollar global operation recognized as the industry leader in Gartner’s Magic
Quadrant report.
Tom has spent the majority of his professional career in New York, New England and Colorado where he
currently resides. He has served in a variety of Sales, Marketing, and Technical positions and is recognized as
an accomplished business strategist, operating equally well within established enterprises and startup
businesses alike. His project teams have driven measurable improvements in areas such as community
outreach; longitudinal data systems; and delivering economic & workforce development centers of
excellence greatly reducing the current alignment gap between industry and education.
A firm believer in giving back, Tom is a 4-time recipient of United States Presidential citations for his
community service and volunteering. Among his personal achievements was leading his local school district’s
(St Vrain Valley SD) attainment of both an Invest-in-Innovation (i3) and Race-to-the-Top grant totaling more
than $20 million – the 1st
district in the country to do so.
In addition to leading multiple Smarter Cities program teams focused on engineering grand challenges in
water, urbanization, resiliency and sustainability, he also serves as a key executive advisor to a variety of
industry clients, strategizing on these challenges and the implementation of multigenerational workforce,
budget deficit reduction alternatives, and social impact investments.
Tom believes he has one of the most rewarding jobs in the world getting to combine his personal passion for
improving the lives of children with the professional responsibilities of delivering a smarter planet.
He has published articles on such topics as System’s Innovation, Creative Thinking, Business Process
Transformation and authored IBMs’ “EcoHub for Dummies – an Intro to Smarter Waste Management”.
