Consumenten raken graag spontaan producten aan, gewoon, om de zachtheid te ervaren bijvoorbeeld. Het gebrek aan aanraking kan zelfs een belangrijke bron van frustratie zijn.
Online consumenten zijn vaak onzeker en zoeken daarom extra informatie (vaak veel meer dan ze in traditionele winkels zouden doen) en beoordelen producten noodgedwongen op andere externe producteigenschappen zoals product reviews, prijs, merk en webshopimago. Ze lijken online gewoonweg niet snel weggeblazen te worden door het product.
Shoppen gaat dus duidelijk niet alleen om het vergaren van informatie. Ook gevoelens, zoals verlangen en fascinatie spelen een belangrijke rol in het aankoopproces en onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat aanraking hier voor een groot deel mee te maken heeft. Het is daarom niet verwonderlijk dat het onvermogen om producten aan te raken nog steeds genoemd als één van de grootste barrières om producten online aan te kopen.
