SILENCE
It is one of the principal means
to attain the spirit of prayer and
to fit oneself for uninterrupted
intercourse with God.
What is not SILENCE?
SILENCE IS NOT AN ABSENCE
OF NOISE.
DEAFNESS
HINDI DAHIL WALA KANG
IMIK…TAHIMIK KA NA!
DEAFNESS
What is SILENCE?
It is an awareness of the
movement of the spirit within
us. It is opening ourselves to
God and contemplating God’s
presence in us!
“Contemplation is the
consciousness of the
universal finite things
present in and through the
divine.”
Schleeimacher
“In the history of salvation, neither in
the clamour nor in the blatant, but the
shadows and the silence are the
places in which God chose to reveal
himself to humankind”
Pope Francis

Psalm 8
1Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them
Psalm 8

Psalm 8 You have made them[d]

than the angels[e]

with glory and
honor.
6
You made them rulers over the
works of your hands;
you put everything under their[g

all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,

the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the

GENESIS 1: 27
WHO AM I?
• I am made from the
likeness and image of
GOD (Gen. 1:27)
• I am special and unique
• I am not the same
person I used to be.
SINCERITY
• Latin word: sin- “without”, cera- “wax”
• “sine cera” means no cover up
• In the olden times, a sculptor uses
was to cover up his mistakes.
MASKS
• Refer to our particular way of acting or
behaving which we think makes us
acceptable to others.
• Beneath the mask is a different person, a
person of real needs and feelings, a
beautiful person, the person whom God
has created and loved.
PROBLEM
“A man cannot be at peace with others until
he has learned to be at peace with himself.”
-Bertrand Russel
• We become comfortable with
our masks and we forget who we
really are.
• Often we have to rediscover the
person in us whom God created.
PROBLEM
“Anything that is not accepted is not
redeemed.”
-St. Irenaeus of Lyons
• We become comfortable with
our masks and we forget who we
really are.
• We must become the person God
wants us to be.
FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS
• They play a very
important in life.
• They are gifts from God.
• They are part of who we
are, part of our loving.
FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS
“FEELINGS
DON’T DIE”
ICEBERGS
• Emotions are very much
like icebergs.
• Only the top 10% of the ice
is visible above the
surface.
• Like the iceberg, most of
our emotions remain
hidden.
However...
• We need not be afraid of
our emotions. They are
simply part of who we are.
• They have no power to
control us unless we give
them that power.
FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS
• They are extremely
personal and unique.
• They can become an asset
instead of a burden.
• However, we must recognize
them for what they are.
STEPS IN RECOGNIZING FEELINGS
1st
:Identification-Allow oneself to experience, not
to cover up emotion. Call it by name: fear, anger, shame,
anxiety,sadness, joy, etc. (GASA)
2nd
: Acceptance- we need ourselves permission to
have feelings and emotions. Say: “I give myself
permission to feel…”
GIVING PERMISSION
AS A CHILD
“I give permission to be angry at my spouse for
leaving me.”
“ I feel abandoned and alone”
“I am afraid because I am weak and not sure if I can
cope alone.”
GIVING PERMISSION
AS A STUDENT
“I am allowed to feel afraid and weak.”
“I am allowed to feel angry even if everyone around me
makes me feel guilty.”
“I can be angry at myself too!”
ENCYCLOPEDIA
One way of dealing with feelings
is to approach them like an
encyclopedia.
They can give much of
information about ourselves and
be of help in making mature
decisions to life’s challenges.
HONESTY AND OPENNESS
Dealing with feelings demands
honesty and openness with oneself.
Sometimes, the process can be
painful.
But let the Lord help you unwrap the
secret workings of your heart.
