Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, one of the top Taliban leaders, was educated at the Indian Military Academy in the 1970s. He studied political science and helped teach Afghan army leaders. His classmates described him as a kind man without extremist views at the time. After serving in the Afghan army, Stanikzai joined the Taliban in 1996 and held several high-level positions, including acting as a key negotiator. Though he drew criticism at times, he was able to maintain influence within the Taliban leadership. Currently, Stanikzai is one of the seven most powerful men in the Taliban and continues to play a prominent role in negotiations.
