It is here we do well to remember the parable of the mustard seed (Matt. 13:31 – 32) that taught us the work of the gospel very often has humble beginnings which grow over time. Due to their lack of faith and hard heartedness they took offense at Jesus (v. 57). For their rejection and unbelief, he withdraws his mighty works from them.

For that reason, Herod wanted to kill John, but he was fearful of what that might do to his political career. How would the people of Galilee respond if he killed one of their prophets (v. 5)? So, he did the next best thing, he threw the Baptizer in prison to silence him.
