This document analyzes the impacts of long hair in football. It discusses that long hair can be used as a tool to aid in tackling players, potentially leading to injuries. The NFL has a "Ricky Rule" stating hair below the jersey is part of the uniform and can be used in tackles. Engineering analysis is used to evaluate forces applied during hair tackles, which can cause neck strain, sprains, head/neck pain, and fractures. One example given is the 2006 tackle of Troy Polamalu by Larry Johnson, where Johnson grabbed Polamalu's hair and dragged him for 5 yards before being penalized. Future work may include more complex models of different sports and hair strengths.
