The narrator had a frustrating day at school and was in a sour mood. They were caught eating sweets in class and received detention. When they got home, they snuck some sweets out of their bag to eat while doing homework, which was covered in red marks from their teacher. Their mother scolded them for eating sweets. In a moment of rebellion, the narrator decided to run away from home to get back at everyone who was always telling them what to do. However, after only being gone a short time, the narrator heard police sirens and saw that their parents, who were divorced, were now together. Seeing this made the narrator feel that life was now sweet.

1. Sweets
It all started when I got home from school, after a frustrating day. At this point in time
life was sour. Everything I did was wrong; I was even caught eating sweets in class, a crime
punishable by an hour of detention. Maybe it was just the weather. It was mid-August, late
summer. It was so humid, you could cook an egg on the car. Anyway when I entered the
door I slung my bag pack to a corner on ground. It landed with a sharp thud. Then I took
off my shoes, this time gently. My shoes were the only things going right at this time.
These were the last things that my dad bought for me, they were really expensive. My dad
doesn’t live with us anymore because he and my mum are divorced, so it’s just my mum and
me. I remember when I was younger and my parents where together. Things were good
then. My dad used to take me to the park every Saturday to feed the ducks, while I was
on his shoulders.
When I had taken off my blazer, I went to the kitchen to finish off my homework. This
was usually how I spent my Monday afternoons. I took my math homework out of my book
bag checked all around me to see if anyone was watching and then snuck out a pack of
sweets that I had bought secretly at the canteen. I knew it was junk food and it was not
good for my teeth but at this moment I didn’t really care. Nowadays people were always
telling me to stop binge eating, especially my mum; she was the worst. I started to chew
noisily as I checked over the mistakes that my teacher had marked. I was supposed to be
correcting the answers but I was just staring with my mouth all the way down to my chest,
full of half chewed sour worms. My homework looked like I had gone over to a pen factory
and given it a generous dousing of red ink!
The sun started to set leaving the sky stained with a pretty amber. I heard my mum
coming through the front door, but it was too late. In a trice she was in the kitchen telling
me off for eating sweets. This time I just wasn’t bothered to argue, I pushed past her to
trudge up the stairs when suddenly I had a brainwave. What if I ran away? That would give
everyone something to think about. Always telling me what to do; eat you apple, tidy your
room or smile you look like someone slapped you. I would run away, immediately after I put
my book bag and my math homework in my room.
I started walking, I had only been gone about half an hour but I suddenly heard the loud
blare of police sirens. Then I saw my mum and my dad! Together! At this point in time life
was sweet.
