Editorial Message
Though it is 60 years then that our country is
introduced with the sugar industry, it is only
seven years since we entered into sugar in-
dustry extensively. This has created chances
for us to take a lesson that carrying out the
various tasks of the industry is so testing as we
have limitations both in capacity as well as the
huge financial resource the sector demands.
And, we now understand that it takes up to
five years to complete a factory and make op-
erational.
It took more time than we anticipated to build
irrigation structures and sugarcane develop-
ment as well as factory and housing construc-
tions which is like building a medium-size
town.
Today, taking a lesson from exposure, we
have opened five new sugar factories since
2014/15. In the strive we made so far we have
developed 100 thousand hectares of land ir-
rigable while more than 96 thousand hectares
of land is covered with sugarcane.
More than half a million people have now got
job opportunities directly and indirectly in the
sector. This number is showing great incre-
ment every time. On the other hand, as the ar-
eas in which the sugar development projects
are being carried out are lowlands and rela-
tively underdeveloped, this has played a great
role for the local community of the project ar-
eas to benefit directly from the project as well
as the social services and infrastructures laid
there.
The effort started to create strong tie and
work with domestic as well as foreign com-
panies either in joint venture or foreign direct
investment modalities and thereby accelerate
the sugar development has continued more
strengthened. As a result many companies
have signed memorandum of understand-
ing with the Corporation while Some others
have reached the stage of signing a contrac-
tual agreement to the next work on the line.
We can mention the German Company- Eu-
gen Schmitt as an example which is going to
set up an ethanol factory at Wenji Shoa Sugar
Factory in a joint venture. And, as per the di-
rectives of the government works to set up
ethanol factories at our own capacity will pro-
ceed more reinforced.
Though our success so far is not enough while
weighed against the goals set in the sugar
development sector, they on the other hand
indicate the hope the industry has. These suc-
cesses did not come without any peril. Limi-
tation in capacity, lack of timely finance the
sector needs as well as intentions and actions
of rent seeking are the main challenges of the
sector.
Fulfilling the goals set in the building of fac-
tory, irrigation infrastructures, housing as well
as sugarcane development during this budget
year, we have planned and entered into action
to produce 7 million 54 thousand quintals of
sugar, 22 million 881 thousand 310 liters eth-
anol, 166 thousand 819.04 tons of molasses
as well as 80 thousand 871 mega watt hour
electric power with eight sugar factories. We
also have planned to become successful in co
products of animal resource, crops and fruits
more than ever.
With regard to capacity building, taking a les-
son from experience of domestic and foreign
companies and thereby fill in skill gaps in the
industry both at leadership as well as profes-
sionals levels through training and then bring
about technology transfer, we have set up a
sugar academy . We have planned the acad-
emy to kickoff this year and then exert our
maximum effort to register the result the in-
dustry seeks.
We all in the sugar development sector have
to be ready to work in a spirit of optimism in
the sector highly believed to have decisive
role in fulfilling the goals of export-led manu-
facturing industry!
We wish this Ethiopian New Year to be a year
during which we will be able to see the hope
in the sugar industry flourished.
Despite the challenges we face our success is
at hand!
Sweet New Year!

products of sugar like molasses
and bagasse had been
presented on the meeting.
Bio refinery is a technology
in which sugar industry
by-products like bagass
and ethanol are made into
fertilizer, energy, medicine,
plastic products, textile
and other products passing
through a series of process in
the chemical industry.
One of the researchers,
Professor Belay Weldeyes said
they are seeing ways to change
the huge sugarcane production
of the nation into juice and
other products.
According to him the chemical
products produced using
various methods have great
benefits in satisfying the
needs of the population which
is increasing. Professor Belay
further said that Brazil, Cuba,
India, China and America have
benefited a great deal from bio
refinery, underlining the need
for Ethiopia to be fruitful in it
too.
Exploiting this opportunity
greatly benefits the country in
boosting industrial expansion,
satisfying local demand,
earning foreign exchange as
well as in creating wide job, he
also added.
Lack of trained labor at medium
level, scarce infrastructure,
and infancy of industry-
university ties are identified
as main challenges, the report
from Ethiopian News Agency
/ENA/ also disclosed.
Speaking on the occasion,
Agriculture and Bio-Economy
Research Coordinator with a
rank of Minister at Policy Study
and Research Center, Dr.Kassu
Ilala said numerous tasks are
being done in an effort made in
enabling the biotechnological
system feed chemical science
and engineering.
He further said that a road
map which enables production
of more than 50 different
products from sugarcane by-
products based on biomass
has been prepared.
He at last calls on higher
educationinstitutionsspecially
those which are accountable
to the Ministry of Education
and Ministry of Science and
Technology ito generate
graduate professionals the
sector highly demands.
