The submitted works are selected by the Hanging Committee, which also decides how the works are to be seen. In 2015, a total of 1131 works were selected.
Artists, if they wish, can put prices on their works for sales. An unkind critic calling it, ‘a high-end junk shop’.

Monreale Cathedral, Sicily
In 1072, the Normans drove the Arabs from Sicily, establishing Palermo as their capital and re-consecrating the cathedral. In 1174, in an act of piety, thanksgiving and commemoration of the exiled Bishop, King William II ordered the construction of a new church in Monreale, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Enlightened, tolerant and appreciative of many aspects of North African and middle-eastern culture and art, William II employed the very best Arabic and Byzantine, as well as Norman craftsmen to work on the cathedral.
The Cathedral of Monreale (1180s) is the pinnacle of achievement of Arab-Norman art. It was founded in 1172 by William II. A Benedictine monastery was built next to the cathedral which is famous for its remarkable interior, the magnificent gold mosaics representing episodes from the Bible. The cloister has pointed Arab arches with geometric motifs, and scenes are sculpted in the capital of the 228 white marble twin columns.
Around the same time, the town of Monreale was founded, which was the seat of the most powerful Archbishops of Sicily in 1183. During the following centuries, new neighbourhoods grew around other religious congregations, leading to the constructions in the 17C and 18C of many ecclesiastical buildings which gave Monreale its characteristic Baroque appearance.
Fontainebleau Chateau
The medieval castle in the site and later chateau was the residence of French monarchs from Louis VII through Napoleon III. It was the traditional residence of the French monarch. It also dated back a long way too, from its beginning of an abbey, to a hunting lodge then to a palace. Unlike Versailles, Fontainebleau is not a vision of one monarch. It is a bewildering of styles from Francois I, who modelled on Florentine and Roman styles. Throughout the visit you will be able to see the changes in French tastes and the changing architectural styles Fontainebleau abiding charm comes from its relative informality and spectacular forest settings. Part of the Chateau today is devoted to the Napoleon Museum. It was here that Napoleon abdicated the throne on 5 April 1814 and made his famous farewell speech to the soldiers of the Old Guard, who followed him in his military campaigns.
John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent was simply the most successful portraitist of his days at the end of the 19C and the beginning of the 20C. He lived in Italy, Paris and London. He travelled widely From to Venice to the Tyrol. Corfu on the European Mediterranean coast. He visited Morocco, Tangiers and Egypt on the North African coast. He even ventured into Lebanon, Syria and the Holyland. In American he went to Montana, Maine, Florida, Boston, New York, Washington DC etc. He was fluent in French, Italian and some German. He was well read in European literature, an accomplished pianist and a passionately keen musician. Henry James, the American writer who lived in Europe describe Sargent as being ‘civilized to his fingertips’. He knew personally many of the artists, performers and painters of his days, including the giants like Degas, Rodin, Monet and Whistler.
Technically Sargent belong to the same line of portraitists like the Velazquez, Frans Hals and van Dyck, all of them committed their paint quickly onto the canvas. You will be amazed on close inspection of their paintings how spontaneous the paints were applied. Sargent like the Impressionists also a practitioner of painting in the ourdoor. This is particularly true with his watercolours, which were often a record of what he had seen. In his later life Sargent was mainly painting for the enjoyment of himself, as an observer. This was true when he was appointed as the War Artist in World War One.
For comparison with his peers, I think it is interesting to compare him with the works of John Frederick Lewis, the orientalist, who also painted in oil as well as watercolour. Sargent and Van Gogh were born a few years apart and their career were developed in different direction regards to their career, style and technique. But both of them painted in the ‘open air’ (plein-air), as well. Sargent was sympathetic to the called of the Impressionists. He even used some of the technique but was never fully converted. Personally, I think Sargent is one of the finest artists of his time, and he knew it too.
Leonardo's Drawing 1.1
This Powerpoint slideshow presentation looks at a selection of Leonardo da Vinci's drawings. More than his paintings, his drawings give us a much better understanding of Leonardo. He was centuries ahead of his time. His studies on anatomy is amazing in a time when people was put into prison for dissecting a corpse. He must have knowledge of things that he was unable to tell for the fear of treading on the establishment of his days. Leonardo da Vinci died about 500 years ago. His drawings travelled through time from the past to us today. It tells us of his journey through life. It was a journey of trying to make sense of world around us. I the infinite depth of time, one day his work will be forgotten and his understandings will be a mere drop in the ocean of knowledge that we have accumulated
Norman Rockwell, American Artist
Norman Rockwell is beyond doubt the most popular painter of the United States of the 20C, not just in America but elsewhere as well. His popularity probably lies in his ability to tell a story, supported by a wealth of details for viewers to discover and his skill to capture moods and expressions. Often his painting is humorous too, the awkwardness of youth, the embarrassment of courting couples, pride in country, history and heritage, reverence, loyalty and compassion. He painted the American Dream. He also has the skills of accuracy and of observation, as the old masters did. Like the Durer, Titan and the Rubens, he is also very successful commercially. Like Michelangelo throughout all his professional career, awarded with many private and public commissions. Like the Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Holbien, he painted the rich and famous. Because of his longevity, he had painted the Boy Scout movement, the technological advances, social developments, the Civil Rights movement and wars of the 20C. Norman Rockwell was demonized by a generation of critics who not only saw him as an enemy of modern art, but of all art. He was an outside the art establishment. The most common criticism of his works is that he chose to depict only the good side of the American experience. This is not altogether true, his works on the Civil Movement, bear witness to that. At times he acted as a social campaigning artist. His used the ordinary American as his subject. He genuinely like people and painted them with benevolent affection. Today a mosaic of one of his painting (Golden Rule, 1961) is hung at the entrance to the Headquarter of the United Nations, in New York. A recognition of his dream of a peaceful world between all races. Using achievements and compare to those achievements made by the old masters, I come see why Norman Rockwell as the greatest American artist of the 20th Century. Bryce Canyon, Utah US
Bryce Canyon is a National Park located in the Southeast corner of the state of Utah. The park consists of a series of view of natural amphitheatres, along the eastern edge of a plateau. Each amphitheatre includes thousands of carved pinnacles in brilliant red colour. These pinnacles are called hoodoos shaped by millions of years of wind, water and geologic upheavals. This slideshow shows you a very brief look at the different parts of the National Park and sketches the geological forces that shaped the canyon that we see today. Thomas Cole
It is a slideshow about the life and works of Thomas Cole and the painters of the Hudson River School. It also includes his painting series on The Course of Empire and Voyage of Life. He is regarded as the founder of the Hudson School of painters. Cole’s work is known for its romantic portrayal of the American wilderness. Pantheon, Rome v 3
Built more than 1800 years ago, the magnificent Pantheon building still stands as a reminder of the great Roman empire. Pantheon, with its thick brick walls and large marble columns, the Pantheon makes an immediate impression on visitors. But for its time the most remarkable part of the building is the more than 43 meter high some. It was the largest dome in the world until 1436 when the Florence Cathedral was constructed. At the top of the dome is a large opening, the oculus, which was the only source of light. The front portico has three rows of 8 columns, each one with a diameter of 1.5m. Originally a temple for all pagan gods, the temple was converted into a church in 609. The Pantheon now contains the tombs of the famous artist

Churchill said many times that WW2 was an ‘unnecessary war’. He was thinking only of the Europe and not the WW2 in the Pacific. Hegemony, imperialism and nationalism had a lot of to do with it, but historian can never be satisfied with these labels. Unlike the sociologists, military strategists, the economists and psychologists, historians cannot be satisfied with generalisations. These are not specific enough for the historians. Historians like to dig into their subject in details and look into the specifics, motives and the events. Because their explanation is in such detail level, inevitably there are many shades of opinions and different views. Then they debate amongst themselves and hopeful come to some kind of conclusion as to what actually happened. But this is too complicated for politicains. They like simple explanation. Politicians pick and choose facts and events to build their case according to their political colours.
This is what is happening to the history of the Second World War. It is been revised, distorted and even denied. In authoritarian society, books are banned, views are censored and people are kept ignorance of the events. In a more open nations, this could lead to denial of holocausts and atrocities. Myths and invention can always manufactured to justify their ideology. As J H Plumb said in ‘The Death of the Past’, the role of the historian was to “dissolve those simple structural generalisations by which our forefathers interpreted the purpose of life in historical terms” and to challenge the use of the past as an instrument of political or social repression. In the words of British historian Eric Hobsbawn “We (historian) have a responsibility to historical facts in general, and for criticizing the politico-ideological abuse of history in particular.” No nation is greater or smaller because of their past, it is what they are doing today that matters. “The First World War cut deep into the consciousness of Modern man. It reshaped the political order in Europe. It memorials stand in every town and village. ……. My aim has been to see the war in historical perspective. I have tried to explain what the war was about; particularly, to resolve the paradox that men were passionately engaged in the war and hated it at the same time. Each conuntry fought ostensibly to defend itself yet sought also to conquer and to make great gains.” 1966.
Too many people still believe the greatness of their nations, of course most people love their own country too. Before the start of the Iraq War in 2003, a patriotic friend called me from the US and ask me “Are you not afraid of the coming Iraq war?”, with her rather blinding enthusiasm for the invasion. I did not answer her. Unknown to her, I was marching against the Iraq war. It was the biggest protest march I have ever seen. On that day, 1 million people marched in London to voice their opposition to the war. At least there were 1 million people who did not believed that Iraq had the Weapon of Mass Destruction neither were they able to stop the war, in an otherwise democratic country.
Leonardo's painting - Who is Mona Lisa ver 2.0
Leonardo was born in or near the town of Vinci, about half way between Florence and Pisa, on 15 April 1452. He was the illegitimate son of a rising Florentine legal official Ser Piero da Vinci. He was good at drawing and was enrolled with the leading Florentine artist of Verrocchio in 1469, at the age of 17. Leonardo was probably the greatest artists of the Renaissance. His studies were strictly based in the scientific methods, on vigorous analysis and on objective reasoning. But it was his inquisitive mind that drove the man forever forward to understand our place in nature. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent in recorded history. Apart from portraits, religious themes and historical paintings, Leonardo’s greatest legacies were his notebooks and drawings. He influenced many of his contemporary artists, including Michelangelo Raphael, Giorgione and Bramante. Yet he always had a deep distrust of human society. “Alone you are all yourself.”
Impressionist by the Sea v 2
Art by its nature is subjective. Its main driving force is the creativity of the artist. Abstract art in the 20C have isolated the artists from their environment and left their spectators wondering ‘what is going on?’. But most artists live in society and have to confront the reality of living in it. Here is a story of how a very influential group of artists were inspired by the technological development of the 19C, namely the coming of the railways. This linked the urban artists to a simpler ways of life and to the nature of the coastal environment. This experience was the source of their inspiration, which created such memorable images of Impressionists by the Sea.
Return to Paris
In the history of Paris, the city has seen a lot of terror and a lot of bloodshed. The city was once occupied by the Roman in 52 BC and it was occupied again as recently as the Second World War, 70 years ago. Paris is always a vibrant city. It was the city of the Enlightened Philosophers and it was the city of the Impressionists. Today it is one of the most favourite tourist destination in the world. It is a city of light and romance and we will return to reclaim the city, its cafes, its theatres, its museums, its concert halls, its monuments, its streets and its squares. Viva la Paris.
Frederic Edwin Church
Frederic Edwin Church is the most well-known member of the Hudson School of painters, who were primarily landscape painters. The word 'sublime' describes the emotional response to immensity or boundlessness, when faced by phenomena of great magnitude. This feeling of sublimation often occurs when confronted by the grandeur of the American wilderness. There is no better American artist to portrait this feeling than Frederic Edwin Church. This was in a time of when America was opening up. Forests were cleared for farming. Factories were being built in the east. Canals connected waterways and railway tracks were laid. This was also a time of the Second Great Awakening, with the founding of new religious sects. In the arts, it was the time of Romanticism, which saw the futility of humankind up against the overwhelming power of nature. Lastly, it was also the time of the American Civil War. It was during period that Frederic Edwin Church celebrated the grandeur of the American Wilderness in his paintings. This is part of a series of Powerpoints on American painters.
Hagia Sophia, Istanbul
Hagia Sofia was built between 532 and 537, as a Christian church. It has influenced architects ever since. The circular dome covering a square base was developed at the same time as the Basilica plan of the Early Christian churches, in Italy. The Byzantine dome was later adopted into Islamic architecture. However, the Roman dome was constructed differently. Romans placed their dome over a solid circle of walling, best seen in the example of the Pantheon in Rome, instead of using the pendentives (an architectural feature).
However, one shared feature of the time between the two styles was the use of opaque glass mosaics in the interior decoration, covering the walls.
The Hagia Sofia plan is basically an inscribed Greek cross. The hall has four piers at the corners of the square rising in circular arches to support a central dome by means of four pendentives. The upper galleries were used by the women, and were reached by steps inside the building. Much of Hagia Sofia's appeal comes from its size. The inside is dominated by the central dome over 30.5 metres in diameter.
Today after about 1500 years of continue used, Hagia Sofia still dominates the skyline of the Bosphorus. It is truly a milestone, among the world’s greatest architectural achievements, a testament of the sophistication of the 6C Byzantine Empire.
Canadian Winter - 20C Canadian Paintings
In the early 20th Century, Canadian were more aware of their own identity. A group of landscape painters called themselves, the Group of Seven aimed to develop their distinctive Canadian style of painting. Most of the artists worked in commercial illustrations. Amongst them were Franklin Varley, Lawren Harris, A Y Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J E H MacDonald and Franklin Carmichael. It was the Canadian answer to the French Impressionists with equally colourful styles. There prominent subjects matters of their paintings were the lone pine, the snow and the Canadian wilderness.
St Denis, Paris - The Beginning of the Gothic Architecture.
The basilica stands on the site of a Gallo-Roman cemetery with the tomb of St Denis, Paris France, thought to have been the first Bishop of Paris, who was martyred c 250 AD. This place of pilgrimage was built in the 5C. Dagobert was a benefactor to it the 7C, and Pepin the Short was crowned king here in 754. It became one of the most powerful Benedictine abbeys in the Middle Ages. Most of the kings and queens of France were buried here from the 6C onwards. The abbey church of St. Denis therefore played a complex and important role for the French monarchy.
The Cathedral of Saint Denis is the birthplace of Gothic architecture. In 1122 Louis VI made this the official burial place for French monarchs, at the request of Abbe Suger. St Louis reserved it for monarchs alone, a rule which was broken several times, and had the remains of his predecessors, transferred to tombs in the crossing of the transept. Suger decided to improve St Denis and rebuilt the basilica. ~The western façade was dedicated in 1140and the chevet in 1144, but the building remained incomplete after the abbe’s death in 1151. Suger’s church represents a landmark to the development of Gothic architecture. Intersecting ribs were used here on a large scale for the first time. In this way, the architect could do without walls between the pillars Vaulting could be extended throughout the ambulatories and the radiating chapels and huge windows could be incorporated in the chevet. This is how ~Suger realized his concept – for him light had a thoroughly metaphysical significance. Another innovative feathure is the rose window on the west façade.

Pantheon, with its thick brick walls and large marble columns, the Pantheon makes an immediate impression on visitors. Churchill said many times that WW2 was an ‘unnecessary war’. He was thinking only of the Europe and not the WW2 in the Pacific. Hegemony, imperialism and nationalism had a lot of to do with it, but historian can never be satisfied with these labels. Unlike the sociologists, military strategists, the economists and psychologists, historians cannot be satisfied with generalisations. These are not specific enough for the historians. Historians like to dig into their subject in details and look into the specifics, motives and the events. Because their explanation is in such detail level, inevitably there are many shades of opinions and different views. Then they debate amongst themselves and hopeful come to some kind of conclusion as to what actually happened. But this is too complicated for politicains. They like simple explanation. Politicians pick and choose facts and events to build their case according to their political colours.
This is what is happening to the history of the Second World War. It is been revised, distorted and even denied. In authoritarian society, books are banned, views are censored and people are kept ignorance of the events. In a more open nations, this could lead to denial of holocausts and atrocities. Myths and invention can always manufactured to justify their ideology. As J H Plumb said in ‘The Death of the Past’, the role of the historian was to “dissolve those simple structural generalisations by which our forefathers interpreted the purpose of life in historical terms” and to challenge the use of the past as an instrument of political or social repression. In the words of British historian Eric Hobsbawn “We (historian) have a responsibility to historical facts in general, and for criticizing the politico-ideological abuse of history in particular.” No nation is greater or smaller because of their past, it is what they are doing today that matters. Before the start of the Iraq War in 2003, a patriotic friend called me from the US and ask me “Are you not afraid of the coming Iraq war?”, with her rather blinding enthusiasm for the invasion. I did not answer her. Unknown to her, I was marching against the Iraq war. It was the biggest protest march I have ever seen. On that day, 1 million people marched in London to voice their opposition to the war. At least there were 1 million people who did not believed that Iraq had the Weapon of Mass Destruction neither were they able to stop the war, in an otherwise democratic country.

Leonardo was born in or near the town of Vinci, about half way between Florence and Pisa, on 15 April 1452. He was the illegitimate son of a rising Florentine legal official Ser Piero da Vinci. He was good at drawing and was enrolled with the leading Florentine artist of Verrocchio in 1469, at the age of 17. Leonardo was probably the greatest artists of the Renaissance. His studies were strictly based in the scientific methods, on vigorous analysis and on objective reasoning. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent in recorded history. Apart from portraits, religious themes and historical paintings, Leonardo’s greatest legacies were his notebooks and drawings. But most artists live in society and have to confront the reality of living in it. Here is a story of how a very influential group of artists were inspired by the technological development of the 19C, namely the coming of the railways. This linked the urban artists to a simpler ways of life and to the nature of the coastal environment. This experience was the source of their inspiration, which created such memorable images of Impressionists by the Sea.

Frederic Edwin Church
Frederic Edwin Church is the most well-known member of the Hudson School of painters, who were primarily landscape painters. The word 'sublime' describes the emotional response to immensity or boundlessness, when faced by phenomena of great magnitude. This feeling of sublimation often occurs when confronted by the grandeur of the American wilderness. There is no better American artist to portrait this feeling than Frederic Edwin Church. This was in a time of when America was opening up. Forests were cleared for farming. Factories were being built in the east. Canals connected waterways and railway tracks were laid. This was also a time of the Second Great Awakening, with the founding of new religious sects. In the arts, it was the time of Romanticism, which saw the futility of humankind up against the overwhelming power of nature. Lastly, it was also the time of the American Civil War. It was during period that Frederic Edwin Church celebrated the grandeur of the American Wilderness in his paintings. This is part of a series of Powerpoints on American painters.
Hagia Sophia, Istanbul
Hagia Sofia was built between 532 and 537, as a Christian church. It has influenced architects ever since. The circular dome covering a square base was developed at the same time as the Basilica plan of the Early Christian churches, in Italy. The Byzantine dome was later adopted into Islamic architecture. However, the Roman dome was constructed differently. Romans placed their dome over a solid circle of walling, best seen in the example of the Pantheon in Rome, instead of using the pendentives (an architectural feature).
However, one shared feature of the time between the two styles was the use of opaque glass mosaics in the interior decoration, covering the walls.
The Hagia Sofia plan is basically an inscribed Greek cross. The hall has four piers at the corners of the square rising in circular arches to support a central dome by means of four pendentives. The upper galleries were used by the women, and were reached by steps inside the building. Much of Hagia Sofia's appeal comes from its size. The inside is dominated by the central dome over 30.5 metres in diameter.
Today after about 1500 years of continue used, Hagia Sofia still dominates the skyline of the Bosphorus. It is truly a milestone, among the world’s greatest architectural achievements, a testament of the sophistication of the 6C Byzantine Empire.
Canadian Winter - 20C Canadian Paintings
In the early 20th Century, Canadian were more aware of their own identity. A group of landscape painters called themselves, the Group of Seven aimed to develop their distinctive Canadian style of painting. Most of the artists worked in commercial illustrations. Amongst them were Franklin Varley, Lawren Harris, A Y Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J E H MacDonald and Franklin Carmichael. It was the Canadian answer to the French Impressionists with equally colourful styles. There prominent subjects matters of their paintings were the lone pine, the snow and the Canadian wilderness.
St Denis, Paris - The Beginning of the Gothic Architecture.
The basilica stands on the site of a Gallo-Roman cemetery with the tomb of St Denis, Paris France, thought to have been the first Bishop of Paris, who was martyred c 250 AD. This place of pilgrimage was built in the 5C. Dagobert was a benefactor to it the 7C, and Pepin the Short was crowned king here in 754. It became one of the most powerful Benedictine abbeys in the Middle Ages. Most of the kings and queens of France were buried here from the 6C onwards. The abbey church of St. Denis therefore played a complex and important role for the French monarchy.
The Cathedral of Saint Denis is the birthplace of Gothic architecture. In 1122 Louis VI made this the official burial place for French monarchs, at the request of Abbe Suger. St Louis reserved it for monarchs alone, a rule which was broken several times, and had the remains of his predecessors, transferred to tombs in the crossing of the transept. Suger decided to improve St Denis and rebuilt the basilica. ~The western façade was dedicated in 1140and the chevet in 1144, but the building remained incomplete after the abbe’s death in 1151. Suger’s church represents a landmark to the development of Gothic architecture. Intersecting ribs were used here on a large scale for the first time. In this way, the architect could do without walls between the pillars Vaulting could be extended throughout the ambulatories and the radiating chapels and huge windows could be incorporated in the chevet. This is how ~Suger realized his concept – for him light had a thoroughly metaphysical significance. Another innovative feathure is the rose window on the west façade.
